Fitzgerald sets the stage for the differences in the classes at the turn of the century. This story intentionally divides society into two very separate and distinct parts. The very rich and the very poor. And neither cared for the other. During the roaring twenties society was being transformed from a rural, farm based society, which was deep with strong moral and family values into the urban society, long in the ways of the world. Drinking, dancing and gambling. In short - as you state above - absorbed in materialistic hedonism. They had a taste of the good life and there was no going back to the farm once they d seen the city s bright lights. In chapter four Nick reminisces about the riotous parties at Gatsby s mansion. He reads from old notes taken during a particular party held on July 5th, 1922. The notes include the names of all manner of the upper crust of the day with asides concerning just how decadent and unconcerned with anyone else this side of the social scale were. JSfK
