You have them as small injections under the skin for between 5 and 10 days. Sometimes you may have low doses of a chemotherapy drug too. The chemotherapy and growth factor injections help your bone marrow to make lots of stem cells. These stem cells then spill out of the bone marrow into the bloodstream, where they can be collected.

    Stem Cell Research is, as the name suggests, research into the properties (and uses) of stem cells. So I guess the next question is "what is a stem cell?" (I should apologise - but this is going to be a long answer. But this is an important subject to get right!) A stem cell is a cell which has not yet "decided" what kind of cell it is going to become (nerve, blood , muscle, etc.) This makes them possibly very useful in medicine, as they can be induced to differentiate into a required cell type, and then used to treat conditions like spinal cord injury, Alzheimers, Parkinson s, cystic fibrosis, and many, many others. Important to note is that, aside from a limited number of trials, stem cells have not yet lived up to their promise - which is why scientists want to be able to continue their work in the area. There are generally two kinds of stem cell - embryonic and adult stem cells, and the controversial ones are embryonic stem cells (ESCs). ESCs are taken from very early (5 day-old) embryos, and harvesting the stem cells DOES kill the embryo. Human ESCs, however, are taken from "leftover" embryos after a successful IVF programme (test-tube babies): When a couple register for IVF treatment, they doctors at the fertility clinic will dose the woman with hormones which make several eggs mature at once in her ovaries. They remove these eggs, and fertilise them in a test tube with sperm, making a number of embryos. They allow these embryos to mature for a few days, and check them for any obvious physical deformities (if the couple are worried about genetic diseases, they might also check them genetically for those diseases). Assuming all is well, they then implant several of these fertilised eggs at one, to increase the chances of a successful pregnancy. The remaining embryos are then frozen, in case the pregnancy doesn t work (so they can try again), or in case the couple want another baby soon. However, it is not safe to keep the frozen embryos for too long, as the risk of defects increases. Guidelines vary, but generally you can keep them for only about 5 years before you are legally required to dispose of them. However, it is possible to use them as a source of ESCs instead, as long as the parents give consent. This does "kill" the embryo, but the embryos had no future anyway, as they were going to have to be disposed of anyway. The analogy I like to think of is that a couple have a child who tragically dies in an accident. They are asked if they want to donate the child s organs, therefore potentially saving several lives, and helping many others. As far as I can see, the situation is no different with ESCs. No-one makes humans embryos specifically *for* harvesting ESCs. And no-one uses aborted foetuses for ESCs (as they are too developed for that). The big advantages of ESCs is that they are "pluripotent" (which means they can theoretically differentiate to become *any* cell type found in the adult body) and they are easy to harvest. Adult stem cells are a type of stem cell found in the adult body. Many different tissues in your body contain such stem cells, but these cells are *not* pluripotent any more - instead they are "multipotent" (capable of becoming several, but not all cell types). An example is the "haematopoetic stem cells" found in your bone marrow: they can become any of your blood cell types (red blood cells, platelets, and all the different kinds of white blood cell), but cannot, for example, become a nerve cell, or a muscle cell. Another example is "umbilical cord stem cells"; these are isolated from the umbilical cord at birth, and are actually another kind of haematopoetic stem cell - they ll make blood cells but nothing else. These are much less controversial, as they can be taken without killing you. BUT - they are actually much harder to locate and purify, they can only become some cell types, and we do not have a stem cell population for all cell types in your body (so there are some cell types we can never make from adult stem cells). One final thing to mention is the new development of "Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells " (IPSCs). These are normal adult cells which can be treated with a cocktail of things to "transform" them into pluripotent stem cells - just like ESCs. This is a promising finding, as it might hold the potential to do away with ESCs eventually. BUT - the cocktail used to transform them contains some nasty things (like cancer-causing viruses), so a lot of research still needs to be done before they will be at all useful. And much of this research will involve using ESCs to try and figure out what kinds of things can be included in the cocktail to make IPSCs, without using viruses. > "My second thought, why is it illegal?" In actual fact, it is not illegal. Adult stem cell research, and IPSC research aren t restricted at all (in fact, IPSCs were originally developed in Japan as a way of getting around that country s restrictions on ESCs). ESC research *is* more restricted - at least where *human* ESCs are concerned; there are no restrictions on animal ECS research. No scientific group anywhere can perform such research without approval from such committees. These committees are composed of both scientists and laypersons, and they take *their* position from the current legal situation and current social mores. Gene therapy, possibly - but stem cells can be used to replace missing or damaged cells, not to get rid of hyperproliferative ones. The Catholic stance on ESC research is pretty unequivocal: it is 100% against it. In fact, because of the potential loss of embryos, the Vatical regards all IVF itself as evil. In fact, they even allege that IVF was never about providing children to childless couples.     Stem cells. depending on what kind, there are embryonic stem cells and non embryonic (from other organs). People are usually more upset about embryonic stems cells because if they are not used for stem cells they could possibly develop into a child. Against stem cells -If your talking about embryonic stem cells, people don t like that they are viturally killing a human.. since people believe that that cell COULD develop into a child. -The cost and research of stem cells is enormous. First of all we don t have any government support.. the only labs that are doing it are people and companies that finance it themselves or either have grants. -We have a lot of information but we don t know what side effects it may have later. The human body is very complex and how are we able to determine what this one cell will do 5 years from now. 10 years? 20 years? -Also, if we do determine the need for stem cells and that they actually work, there may be a negative social result. Odds are, companies are going to have pay people to donate stem cells. Just like people get paid to donate, eggs, sperm, blood, platlets.. etc. Can you see people who just need the money donating cells for the wrong reasons? ( I think they should donate stem cells if they really want to help find the cure to a disease) -Some people think that we are just taking cells without the donor knowing. This is untrue. The donor knows. Now the good - People (millions) are suffering from so many diseases, stems cells may be our chance to find a cure. - Yes, we are using one egg. but how many lives can we save. If we find out that we can cure someone of cancer, won t that save thousands??? -If we find the cure, we would be able to learn more about that cell and that disease and how the body interacts with the disease. -Also, if we find the cure, we can see how it interacts with the body and possibly see what kinds of mechanisms it uses.. So then we find some pharmaceutical company to develop a drug that mimics what this cell did to cure the person. -So for people who can t have children, they could donate their cells to other people so that they can have a child. but some people don t like that they could have a child out there that is theirs and they don t know about it. I think its better to use those cells for research to help find a cure than to waste them. (I hope you know by now that I am for stem cells)
