With conference season right around the corner, nurse practitioners should start planning which events they are going to attend this year. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners is hosting three empowering conferences, and each specialty organization will bring together their experts to discuss the latest innovations in their field. Every conference promises to be filled with excitement.

Although residency programs are not required for nurse practitioners, new graduates pursue them to enhance their abilities, strengthen their resume, or learn a new subspecialty. Often the term ‘residency’ refers to programs designed to improve skills and prepare for board certification, while a ‘fellowship’ is designed to teach a subspecialty. Nurse practitioner residencies and fellowships are becoming increasingly popular as hospitals attempt to attract top talent. Here you’ll find a list of nurse practitioner residencies organized by specialty.

During my first year of undergraduate study at ABC University, a professor shared with me an interesting – and oddly grammatical – philosophy. The purpose of education, he said, is to do one thing: namely, give the human one small letter, the letter “e”, to make the human, humane. This simple, yet profound, observation stayed with me throughout my undergraduate training, and it remains with me still as I move along my career path in nursing.

In regard to my actual nursing experience, I cannot overstate how professional and personal growth occurred, and occur, in complimentary ways. I feel that this is an essential component to being a nurse, as the best work comes from the satisfaction that the work inherently provides.

It sounds like you are not a traditional student and the school wants some more information about what you ve been doing since highschool. There aren t going to be samples out there for this type of letter- it s going to have to be something ABOUT YOU and YOU specifically and it s gotta come from the heart. First, I would make a CV (it s kinda like a resume, but it s not for any job). Use this as almost an outline. For example, after you graduated from highschool, you went to work at ABC Company doing this and that. blah, blah, blah.. Then, I was pregnant with my first daughter. My daughter really motivated my to go back and improve my grades so I could be a nurse, blah blah blah..

Asia, The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), is a four-year degree that prepares nurses for graduate-level education. For the first two years in a BSN program, students usually obtain general education requirements and spend the remaining time in nursing courses. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing is an academic degree that emphasizes research and nursing theory. Simply apply to the university of your choice as a "pre nursing" student and you re on your way. Nothing happens without first submitting an application for university admission. Most universities have an online application process. Start there. Many universities base admission decisions on a variety of factors. The high school grade-point average (GPA) accounts for approximately two-thirds of the decision. The remaining one-third is based on other factors. Asia, I d like to offer you some very good advice which may serve to assist your decision making immensely ~ Let me be honest, it s not terribly important where you get your BSN (don t pay too much, it s not worth it) however what you want to be sure and do is find out what the school s NCLEX passing percentage is i.e. how many graduates of the nursing program successfully completed the national nursing test (NCLEX). I ve supplied you with a sample link which you may use to compare passing rates at different nursing schools in CA. I don t know where you re actually located so simply google the information which pertains to your particular state. If you find that a school is not listed then contact the individual program directly for the most accurate and up-to-date information. Schools with very high pass rates suggest a rigorous and demanding curriculum. That may or may not be what you re looking for. Students enrolled in such a program must meet very stringent demands, the assignments and exams are probably intense, you may feel that too much is being asked of you, students are expected to conform i.e. strict attendance, tardiness not tolerated, group projects, etc. They often have higher passing percentages on the NCLEX because they weed out the weaker students so effectively during the course i.e. many students don t graduate. Schools with very low pass rates suggest a less structured program which you may or may not like i.e. you ll engage in more independent study and learning, less oversight and direction from instructors. Students enrolled in such a school may flunk out or not pass the NCLEX because they are unmotivated and/or are poor independent learners. These schools will consequently have higher graduation rates because they don t aggressively weed out the weaker students who are then ill prepared for the NCLEX. Many students end up taking it 2 or 3 times in order to pass. So, there are several things to consider when deciding which school is better or "best." Best for YOU is really what you want to think about. What is important to you? Does the school atmosphere work for you ? Visit each school and take a tour. Ask to talk to some faculty and students. Does the school feel "too big and impersonal" or "too small, without enough support"? Consider distance as well. How far is the school (and the hospitals used for clinical rotations) from your home in TIME as well as in MILES (fuel consumption). Clinicals often start @6:45 am. Remember, time spent in traffic is time unavailable for other things like studying, writing papers or working. TIME is going to become a VERY important commodity while in any training curriculum so distance to and from school and clinicals may have a significant impact on your GPA and your ability to meet deadlines. How are the clinicals scheduled? Will you go every week and if so then how many actual hours will you be assigned? To become a confident nurse you ll need adequate clinical experience as well as book work to prepare you for the NCLEX. Does the school offer a mentoring program? What kind of tutoring is available? What is the credit per hour cost? Adds up quite quickly if you re the one paying especially if you re applying as an out of state student. What kind of student aid will you qualify for if any? Is there a rental program for text books or are you forced to buy them all? What online classes are offered? They can be great for getting many prerequisites out of the way but not so great for the actual nursing classes. Once there, if you find you need help or advice look for a study group, mentor, or online support group at the school you re attending. Best of luck.

Both UT and NYU are amazing schools and provided me with enriching experiences.  It is my hope that by publishing my application essays, you may better understand what admission boards are looking for.  The following essay was submitted for admission to the full-time Adult and Geriatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, Advanced Practice Nurse, Master’s of Science Degree program at NYU for the Fall of 2013.

Capella University offers CCNE-accredited online nursing programs designed to meet the needs of RNs at every career stage:

Although you will be studying towards becoming an FNP, the university will want to know that you already have an understanding of what that job requires. You need to make sure that your responses represent the overall roles of FNPs. It is likely that you are already employed in a health care setting if you want to be an FNP, as it is a master’s degree, so perhaps you might want to interview someone in your employment before writing your essay.
