Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by about 130 million people mainly in West Punjab in Pakistan and in East Punjab in India. There are also significant numbers of Punjabi speakers in the UK, Canada, the UAE, the USA, Saudi Arabia and Australia. Punjabi descended from the Shauraseni language of medieval northern India and became a distinct language during the 11th century.

In India Punjabi is written with the Gurmukhi (ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ) alphabet, while in Pakistan it is written with a version of the Urdu alphabet known as Shahmukhi (شاہ مکھی). The written standard for Punjabi in both India and Pakistan is known as Majhi (ਮਾਝੀ/ ماجھ), which is named after the Majha region of Punjab.

Typing in Hindi is 10 times harder than typing in English. There are 22 official languages in India..Marathi, Punjabi, Assamese, Telugu, and many more. With that amount of linguistic diversity, typing in English makes far more sense. Moreover, English has been the medium for more than two centuries. English doesn t have the status of an official language, and its certainly not compulsory during education. Hindi is the national language..but not all states communicate in Hindi.

I think that there are many reasons for this phenomenon. Pakistani Punjabis are Muslim and Urdu is seen as a more Islamic language than Punjabi. The government of Pakistan is pretty much dominated by Punjabis and Muhajirs. The Mohajirs were the people who immigrated to Pakistan after independence from India. They are the most educated people in Pakistan and they promote Urdu. Secondly there is no real script to write Punjabi in Pakistan. Sikhs have Gurmukhi script that they use to write Punjabi. The only script that it sometimes used to write Punjabi is Pakistan is the Shahmukhi script. The government does not promote Punjabi. Sikhs tend to be most proud of Punjabi since their religion is deeply rooted in Punjab and Punjabi language. However the same cannot be said about Pakistani Punjabis. I know it is a sad situation when people are unwilling or unable to promote their mother language. However, it is important to note that Punjabi, despite lacking any official status, is still important in Pakistan. The biggest and most popular movies in Pakistan tend to be Punjabi even though more Urdu films are made. I guess the heart of Pakistan is still Punjabi despite the fact that Punjabi is ignored and looked down upon.. Punjabi language has rich poetry and literature. Many Pakistani also view Urdu as a bond that hold Pakistan together and they are fearful when Punjabis begin to promote their language. I guess that they will know the value of Punjabi after they lose it. There is a saying in Punjabi that "maa boli nu bhul jawega, oh kakhan vangu rul jawega". "If you forget your mother language, you will be lost"
