Persuasion is generally an exercise in creating a win-win situation. You present a case that others find beneficial to agree with. You make them an offer they can’t refuse, but not in the manipulative Godfather sense.

Writing a persuasive essay is like being a lawyer arguing a case before a jury. The writer takes a stand on an issue—either “for” or “against”—and builds the strongest possible argument to win over the reader.

In a persuasive essay, it’s the writer’s job to convince the reader to accept a particular point of view or take a specific action. Persuasive essays require good research, awareness of the reader’s biases, and a solid understanding of both sides of the issue. A good persuasive essay demonstrates not only why the writer’s opinion is correct, but also why the opposing view is incorrect.

The best students enjoy writing essays because they’re a chance to shine; they’re an interesting intellectual exercise in which the writer must craft thoughtful arguments on complex topics within the confines of a prescribed and often restrictive word count.

For many such students, each essay brings with it the challenge of making it that little bit better than the last one. The problem is that when you write essays regularly, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut of repeating the same formula each time particularly when you already receive good feedback from the teachers who read them. So how do you take your essays to the next level and go from great to brilliant? Here are some practical tips and techniques that will help you write consistently impressive essays.

Emotional appeal is definitely a strong persuasive technique, but it depends upon the specific emotion you want to evoke in your target. Do you want them to be excited about something? Use lots of exclamation points! Exaggerate and tell them that this is the greatest advice you have ever received! Of course you want to use this advice! Do you want them to feel sympathy for your lack of an iPhone? Use comparison and contrast, and be dramatic. Everyone you know has an iPhone. You can t possibly stay in touch with all of your friends if you don t have an iPhone with the latest communication technology. In fact, you will probably lose friends if you don t get an iPhone. And that would be tragic. Bandwagon speaks for itself: Everyone has it, so obviously you need it if you are going to fit in. Urgency also speaks for itself: You need to have it right now! And how to set up a letter? That depends upon the type of letter, and to whom you address it. Generally, address your audience ("Dear ____," "To _____," etc.) and then open it with a few sentences to get them excited about the iPhone before you begin your argument for why YOU need an iPhone.
