Who would read John Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding?

18 Jan 2017 21:24 | Author: heavymouse687 | Category: Cover letter for a recreation programmer

John Locke was born in 1632 in Wrington, a small village in southwestern England. His father, also named John, was a legal clerk and served with the Parliamentary forces in the English Civil War. His family was well-to-do, but not of particularly high social or economic standing. Locke spent his childhood in the West Country and as a teenager was sent to Westminster School in London.

Locke was successful at Westminster and earned a place at Christ Church, Oxford. He was to remain in Oxford from 1652 until 1667. Although he had little appreciation for the traditional scholastic philosophy he learned there, Locke was successful as a student and after completing his undergraduate degree he held a series of administrative and academic posts in the college. Some of Locke’s duties included instruction of undergraduates. One of his earliest substantive works, the Essays on the Law of Nature , was developed in the course of his teaching duties. Much of Locke’s intellectual effort and energy during his time at Oxford, especially during his later years there, was devoted to the study of medicine and natural philosophy (what we would now call science). Locke read widely in these fields, participated in various experiments, and became acquainted with Robert Boyle and many other notable natural philosophers. He also undertook the normal course of education and training to become a physician.

Locke engaged in a number of controversies during his life, including a notable one with Jonas Proast over toleration. But Locke’s most famous and philosophically important controversy was with Edward Stillingfleet, the Bishop of Worcester. Stillingfleet, in addition to being a powerful political and theological figure, was an astute and forceful critic. The two men debated a number of the positions in the Essay in a series of published letters.

Locke was awarded a bachelor''''s degree in February 1656 and a master''''s degree in June 1658. [8] He obtained a bachelor of medicine in February 1675, [9] having studied medicine extensively during his time at Oxford and worked with such noted scientists and thinkers as Robert Boyle , Thomas Willis , Robert Hooke and Richard Lower. In 1666, he met Lord Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury , who had come to Oxford seeking treatment for a liver infection. Cooper was impressed with Locke and persuaded him to become part of his retinue.

Locke had been looking for a career and in 1667 moved into Shaftesbury''''s home at Exeter House in London, to serve as Lord Ashley''''s personal physician. In London, Locke resumed his medical studies under the tutelage of Thomas Sydenham. Sydenham had a major effect on Locke''''s natural philosophical thinking – an effect that would become evident in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding.

John Locke was born in 1632 in Wrighton, Somerset. His father was a lawyer and small landowner who had fought on the Parliamentarian side during the English Civil War of the 1640s. Using his wartime connections, he placed his son in the elite Westminster School.

John Locke’s closest female friend was the philosopher Lady Damaris Cudworth Masham. Before she married the two had exchanged love poems, and on his return from exile, Locke moved into Lady Damaris and her husband’s household.

John Locke is a good read to consider when you re looking at how the american government was formed. The founding fathers used a lot of his ideas. I ve only read parts of it, but I know you can generally get a good summary of the whole work on wikipedia and maybe on sparknotes. If you want someone to compare him to, check out Rousseau s "On the Social Contract" - which is a work that helped spur the French Revolution. I felt like they had a lot of similarities.

John Locke (1632-1704) was a major English philosopher, whose political writings in particular helped pave the way for the French and American revolutions.    He coined the phrase ''''pursuit of happiness,'''' in his book An Essay Concerning Human Understanding , and thus this website is deeply indebted to him.  Thomas Jefferson took the phrase "pursuit of happiness" from Locke and incorporated it into his famous statement of a peoples'''' inalienable right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" in the Declaration of Independence.

What most people don''''t know, however, is that Locke''''s concept of happiness was majorly influenced by the Greek philosophers, Aristotle and Epicurus in particular.  Far from simply equating "happiness" with "pleasure," "property," or the satisfaction of desire, Locke distinguishes between "imaginary" happiness and "true happiness."  Thus, in the passage where he coins the phrase "pursuit of happiness," Locke writes:

John Locke, born on August 29, 1632, in Wrington, Somerset, England, went to Westminster school and then Christ Church, University of Oxford. At Oxford he studied medicine, which would play a central role in his life. He became a highly influential philosopher, writing about such topics as political philosophy, epistemology, and education. Locke's writings helped found modern Western philosophy.

Influential philosopher and physician John Locke, whose writings had a significant impact on Western philosophy, was born on August 29, 1632, in Wrington, a village in the English county of Somerset. His father was a country lawyer and military man who had served as a captain during the English civil war.

John Locke (1632-1704) was a major English philosopher, whose political writings in particular helped pave the way for the French and American revolutions.    He coined the phrase ''pursuit of happiness,'' in his book An Essay Concerning Human Understanding , and thus this website is deeply indebted to him.  Thomas Jefferson took the phrase "pursuit of happiness" from Locke and incorporated it into his famous statement of a peoples'' inalienable right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" in the Declaration of Independence.

What most people don''t know, however, is that Locke''s concept of happiness was majorly influenced by the Greek philosophers, Aristotle and Epicurus in particular.  Far from simply equating "happiness" with "pleasure," "property," or the satisfaction of desire, Locke distinguishes between "imaginary" happiness and "true happiness."  Thus, in the passage where he coins the phrase "pursuit of happiness," Locke writes:

Quote: John Locke (b. 1632, d. 1704) was a British philosopher, Oxford academic and medical researcher. Locke s monumental "An Essay Concerning Human Understanding" (1689) is one of the first great defenses of empiricism and concerns itself with determining the limits of human understanding in respect to a wide spectrum of topics. It thus tells us in some detail what one can legitimately claim to know and what one cannot.
