Early Childhood Education is a relatively new field when compared to other forms of education. Early Childhood Education refers to the school years prior to compulsory education. This is commonly referred to as preschool, daycare, or Head Start.

As education has grown into the institution that is known today, more students are being prepared at an earlier age. Students who used to learn the basics of letters and counting in kindergarten are now being asked to do much more at that level, meaning preschool is needed to offer the basics for those who may not receive that basic education at home. Preschool is thought to prepare students to be lifelong learners. In addition, preschool and early education programs help students build social skills in working and playing with others.

The compulsory school age in Ireland is 6 and all forms of pre-primary education are optional. However, children from the age of 4 can be enrolled in infant classes in primary schools. Nearly 40% of 4-year-olds and virtually all 5-year-olds attend primary school, where early education is provided in infant classes.

In addition to the provision for children in the infant classes in primary schools, the Department of Education and Skills funds some specific pre-primary services. These include:

The emotional, social and physical development of young children has a direct effect on their overall development and on the adult they will become. That is why understanding the need to invest in very young children is so important, so as to maximize their future well-being.

Babies begin to learn about the world around them from a very early age – including during the prenatal, perinatal (immediately before and after birth) and postnatal period.

Early childhood educators have one of the most rewarding and difficult jobs. They are in charge of preparing young minds for the challenges and opportunities discovered as they embark on their educational careers.

There are many articles written about early childhood education. These articles can be excellent resources for educators and parents to help maximize the benefits for young students.

Great story. Well written. I have done some editorial work on it. Please see below. Some words and expressions were not clear: 1. mom s boyfriend s mother? Then you speak of a stepfather too. It is all a bit confusing. 2. quest room? Do you mean guest room? 3. Some of the proposed changes are designed to avoid repetition or simplify the phrases and sentences. Good work. SAYING GOODBYE I met them about two years ago, and I have lived with them for about four months now. The people I live with are the. boyfriend’s mother and stepfather. My room is their quest room, which once belonged to Liz’s mother, Thelma, whom we call Lally. I know Lally because before I moved into the house I used to help take care of her. I would come over three days a week to clean, cook her lunch, and keep her company. She would tell me stories of her childhood, what it was like growing up in England, her loving husband Frank, and her three children Dianne, Elizabeth, and Penny. Lally had a medical history of experiencing strokes, and another soon followed, which to her misfortune landed her in a home for the elderly, called Horizon Health. As they no longer had Lally in their quest room, they allowed me to move into it. Even though I was happy living with Liz and Tony, I had hoped that one day she would get better, so they could take her home. Of course, I understood it meant that I would have to go back to live with my mother. Lally made some progress, and started to speak more clearly. So we had kept our hope that she would get well enough to come home, as we had promised her. As the days went bye we began to lose our hope of bringing her home. Then it finally happened, we received a call from Horizon Health at 11.00 pm on.., that “Thelma Lawrence has had another stroke.” Getting that piece of news about Thelma led me on to an unforgettable journey of discovering whom I am.
