I was fourteen when I found out my mother had a tumor. My parents threw around big words like benign and malignant. My mind immediately went back to my eighth grade health class when we learned about our bodies and medical terms, as well as the circulatory system and benign and malignant tumors. The type of stuff I never thought would apply to me. The words benign or malignant meant either nothing to worry about or cancer. Knowing this at age fourteen was like getting a punch to the stomach.

When I finally saw my mother, it was a relief, followed by a pain in my stomach. She was covered in bandages with a pale face and unfocused eyes. I had never seen my mother so weak and vulnerable. I was terrified. When we got home, there was a phone call. The tumor was malignant. My mother had cancer.

Any conclusion paragraph only serves to summarize the body of an essay, emphasize certain points and to make final conclusions, if any. You already have the workload done, we just need to encapsulate the essence of the essay and put a period on it. So for you we would start with something like.. I was glad I chose hayley after realizing the many conversation topics I would have with here especially concerning paramore and whether she really did like brownies with ice cream or not. From the conversation from my perspective I can see that I would find out many interesting things and I would like to think she prefers brownies over bananas and ice cream but that remains to be seen. etc etc.. and one day I hope I have the opportunity to have this conversation but until then I can only imagine the discourse we would have. (Ps I have no idea who this person is or if they are even alive as I am just throwing out a rough example) So you have the ideas there, just paraphrase it, wrap it up, make a point or two of the entire gist of the idea of the essay and end it. That s it and it s easier than you think since you already have the info in front of you.

A thesis paragraph is very important to set the scene for the rest of the paper. First, write out what you would think would be a good thesis paragraph. Then, highlight the main idea, italicize the supporting idea, and underline the contrary idea. I will use and example from the book "Lord of the Flies": Even though he cannot always express himself in front of the others, Simon is the one who tries to show everybody the truth. He is an honest, visionary boy that has nothing but good intention throughout his life on the island. In this example, "Even thought he cannot always express himself in front of the others" is the contrary idea. "Simon is the one who tried to show everybody the truth" is the main idea. "He is an honest, visionary boy that has nothing but good intentions throughout his life on the island" is the supporting statement to the main idea. Notice that the main idea is longer than the contrary one. The contrary idea is always started with "even though" or "despite the fact that" to show that this is something somebody opposing your statement could think, but in the end there isn t enough evidence in the book/movie/ anything you might be writing on to support the contrary idea more than the main idea. Now look at your own thesis paragraph. Can you identify each part without trouble? If not, you must re-word it. If you can, then excellent. These three items do not make up the entire paragraph. You need and introduction to set the scene stating what you are writing your paper on. In your case, the mothers in the two works you ve stated. Then, you need the main, contrary, and supporting idea. Finally, you need to make a conclusion sentence that will lead into the contrary idea paragraph (thesis papers go in order of least to most important. Since the contrary idea is not your focus, you want to write about that first, then the main idea, then the reasoning for your main idea, and then the conclusion paragraph. Your teacher may be having you write in a different format, but this is the general format for thesis papers.) Hope this helps :)
