Write Source - MLA Style

top

Only the first page should include the whole heading and title. All margins--top, bottom, and sides--should be set to one inch (1 ) throughout the whole paper. Don't add extra spaces between the heading and the title, nor should there be extra spaces between the title and the body of the paragraph.

Use a reasonably-sized font: either 10 characters per inch or a 12 point font. And choose a font that is easy to read rather one that is decorative: Arial, Lucida, Modern, Palermo or Times New Roman are some good choices. Scripted fonts are hard to read even if they do make your paper look nice ; it is the content of the paper that is most important, and making it easy for your readers to understand that content is always a good choice.

MLA format is one of the major writing styles used in academic and professional writing. When writing an MLA paper, keep in mind the following stylistic rules.

The Modern Language Association (MLA) is involved with the study and teaching of language and literature. MLA documentation style is used in many research papers, especially in middle and high schools. Check your Write Source text for details.

Note: In April of 2009, the Modern Language Association released a seventh edition of the MLA Handbook , in which they made a few important changes to MLA documentation style. The most significant change are as follow:

Format for entries: A single space is used after any punctuation mark. When dividing a long word or URL onto two lines, put hyphen, slash, or period at the end of the line. Do not add a hyphen to a URL that was not originally there. Never begin a new line with a punctuation mark. Double-space all lines in a bibliography entry. Do not indent the first line of a bibliography entry, indent second and subsequent lines 5 spaces, or 1/2" (1.25 cm) from the left margin. Please see Chapter 11. Guidelines on How to Write a Bibliography for details.

When writing a bibliography, remember that the purpose is to communicate to the reader, in a standardized manner, the sources that you have used in sufficient detail to be identified. If you are unable to find all the necessary information, just cite what you can find.

When revising your essay, make sure your paper follows MLA style format. This page contains some general guidelines for the physical arrangement of your pages.

For answers to specific questions, either follow the links on the preceding page , refer to the MLA Handbook , 4th ed., or check with your instructor.

MLA Format is commonly required of middle school, high school and college students. It is a very professional way to format a paper, and, even if not required, is a nice, scholarly touch. MLA Format can easily be used in many word processing systems, but this article covers what specific labels and tabs can be used in Microsoft Works (most versions are the same as far as MLA formatting is concerned).

MLA format is a specific way to write references for paper. It comes in a book, or search "MLA format" on line. It has a format for everything - personal interviews, websites, books, magazines, CD s - you name it. Believe me, teachers have the book and know what it says - they ll mark you down for every misplaced comma. So use the book. And if you use the book, you might get extra points for your bibliography. good luck

This Chapter deals only with simple and common examples on how to write Footnote and Endnote citations. To view examples, see Chapter 8. First Footnotes and Endnotes - Examples in MLA Style as well as Footnotes - Sample Page and Endnotes - Sample Page.

Footnotes and Endnotes are used to give credit to sources of any material borrowed, summarized or paraphrased. They are intended to refer readers to the exact pages of the works listed in the Works Cited , References , or Bibliography section.

Using direct quotations involves using the exact words of others in your paper, and under the MLA format, you must format quotations differently depending on their length.

Short quotations are less than four lines of prose or three lines of verse (poetry)
Long quotations are more than four lines of prose or three lines of verse (poetry) and include multi-paragraph quotes.

Many instructors assign outlines in high school and college writing classes to help students get their ideas together before writing an essay. An outline can be beneficial as you write because it keeps you on task and helps you stay organized. Modern Language Association format outlines follow a specific and formal structure. They include many different levels of information; each level has a specific meaning and should include a specific type of information.

Use Roman numerals -- I, II, III, IV, V and others -- to signal main headings. Follow each Roman numeral by a period and a space before you enter the heading. Include a minimum of three main headings in the outline. Each main heading should represent a paragraph in the essay, so each should relate directly to the thesis. The main heading should state the paragraph’s main point. Arrange main headings in the order that the paragraphs will be written in your essay.
