Maya Angelou does this in all of her autobiographies, most notably "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." Not only are there great, yawning years-long gaps in the narrative, she divides her life up into different books. And there are gaps between the books, where important things happen. For example, she is a single mother but never really talks about her son s father, her son s birth or that relationship. In Angela s Ashes, the author also skips over years. I think that this is more common in modern memoirs than we realize. If it s done skilfully, the reader hardly notices.

"talk" about your experience, only write what you have to say on paper. Then go back and clean it up in regards to grammar, coherence, transition and the like. Be sure to include how you felt during the project, how you changed or did not change, and what ways you think differently about managing your bipolar situation. Or, talk about these things on a recorder and then write from what you said. By the way, a good way to manage this is to stay grounded, understand when you are picking up energy from others and then get rid of that energy that is not yours. You probably do better when you are not around very many people.
