An area of study often overlooked in any history of the First World War is that of events between the declaration of war by Germany, against France on the 3rd of August and Belgium, on the morning of the 4th of August 1914, and the stabilisation of the Western Front in late November.

As pre-war plans, which saw the French army, covered by its fortresses along the Franco German border, attacking towards Eastwards towards Metz, were put in train on August 4th the German 1st, 2nd and 3rd Armies, swinging slightly left to avoid neutral Holland, swept into Belgium and Luxemburg as part of the Schlieffen[1] plan, which saw them advance in an arc which would sweep North of Paris thus completing the encirclement of the capital of France blocking access to the Channel ports.

I m not sure about your thesis. Photographic technology has certainly evolved since the civil war, but the images of war are no less brutal. Matthew Brady s civil war images were mostly of the dead after a battle, not as it happened, but the emotional bottom line is about the same. I would think that WWI might be the most interesting war to write about. For one thing, it was the ugliest war with the most death, and for another, cameras could be hand-held and there are many motion-pictures of combat. The dates will also get you off the hook for live interviews.

Trench warfare is a form of war in which both opposing armies have static lines of defense. Trench warfare also, of course, involves defensive formations in trenches. During WW1, there was rapid improvements in military equipment. Not being in a trench revealed one self to things such as bombs, snipers, gating guns. A lot of men feared that they would know the person on the other side. so this also made it a lot easier on people killing one another since they didn t really have to see who they were shooting.Trenches also allowed better maneuverability and defense. Soldiers needed a place to hide and reload and being out in the open field, trenches were a optimal choice.
