This kind of citizen science has exploded in recent years because of smartphones. Now, according to a new review of research about Earth's biodiversity, it's giving conservationists hope that new technology can slow extinctions. (See: 5 Surprising Drone Uses (Besides Amazon Delivery ). )

Study leader Stuart Pimm , a conservation ecologist at Duke University and contributor to National Geographic's News Watch blog, and his colleagues analyzed various data sources—in particular the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species , a global inventory of species—to produce the first major review of extinction data. How about zebra mussels? They are causing lots of trouble in northern lakes. See refs

The golden-headed or Cat Ba langur, shown here at the Endangered Primate Rescue Center in Vietnam''''s Cuc Phuong National Park, is a critically endangered primate. Earth''''s species are rapidly dwindling, due largely to habitat destruction and climate change.

On May 19, 2010, at Joint Base Balad, north of Baghdad in Iraq , someone brought U.S. service member Jonathan Trouern-Trend a frog in a plastic bottle. The brightly colored amphibian had been hiding out in an unlikely place: the latrine.

While natural extinction of species takes place continuously “in the background” of history, it has also been estimated that the current extinction rates are around 1,000 times higher than the “background” extinction rates. (2)

The main fundamental cause of animal extinction in most recent times has been, without any reasonable doubt, human demand , either for animal resources directly, or for the natural resources constituting the animals’ habitats.

There are now 41,415 species on the IUCN Red List, and 16,306 of them are endangered species threatened with extinction. This is up from 16,118 last year. This includes both endangered animals and endangered plants.

The current rate of extinction appears to be hundreds, or perhaps even thousands, of times higher than the background rate. It is difficult to be precise because most of the endangered species which are becoming disappearing species have never been identified by scientists.

Habitat loss means that the golden-crowned sifaka now has one of the smallest distributions of all lemur species. While this sifaka’s dry forest habitat was previously under threat from the logging industry and bush fires, the recent discovery of gold in the region has resulted in further swathes of forest disappearing to make way for the miners, who also hunt lemurs for food.

Endangered species are those considered to be at risk of extinction, meaning that there are so few left of their kind that they could disappear from the planet altogether. Endangered species are threatened by factors such as habitat loss, hunting, disease and climate change, and usually, endangered species, have a declining population or a very limited range.

A study in Nature suggested the without some form of radical change 25% of the world's land animals will become extinct within the next 50 years.

When considering the reasons why so many species are becoming endangered it is important to realise that this is very closely linked to the need to conserve the biodiversity of the planet.
