Effectively writing different types of essays has become critical to academic success. Essay writing is a common school assignment, a part of standardized tests, and a requirement on college applications. Often on tests, choosing the correct type of essay to write in response to a writing prompt is key to getting the question right. Clearly, students can’t afford to remain confused about types of essays.

There are over a dozen types of essays, so it’s easy to get confused. However, rest assured, the number is actually more manageable. Essentially there are four major types of essays, with the variations making up the remainder.

    What is it?
This is the type of essay where you prove that your opinion, theory or hypothesis about an issue is correct or more truthful than those of others. In short, it is very similar to the persuasive essay (see above), but the difference is that you are arguing for your opinion as opposed to others, rather than directly trying to persuade someone to adopt your point of view.

    Tips for writing argumentative essays:
    1) Make a list of the pros and cons in your plan before you start writing. Choose the most important that support your argument (the pros) and the most important to refute (the cons) and focus on them.

It goes without saying that different types of essay may require certain deflections from the basic essay structure. It order to get acquainted with them proceed to Types of essays:

    Structure of the argumentative essay
A good argumentative essay has several paragraphs that should be concentrated on different aspects of the essay

Argumentative essays can be written on many different topics. Delicate approach to choice of a topic or keen understanding of the given topic is the key element of good essay writing. Here you can see some examples of argumentative essay topics:

An essay is, generally, a piece of writing that gives the author''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s own argument — but the definition is vague, overlapping with those of an article , a pamphlet , and a short story. Essays have traditionally been sub-classified as formal and informal. Formal essays are characterized by "serious purpose, dignity, logical organization, length," whereas the informal essay is characterized by "the personal element (self-revelation, individual tastes and experiences, confidential manner), humor, graceful style, rambling structure, unconventionality or novelty of theme," etc. [1]

The concept of an "essay" has been extended to other mediums beyond writing. A film essay is a movie that often incorporates documentary filmmaking styles, and focuses more on the evolution of a theme or idea. A photographic essay covers a topic with a linked series of photographs that may have accompanying text or captions.

In the application process, your essays are the main factor that sets you apart as you won t see the admissions committee face to face. Unless you have an interview with an alumni or an admissions officer than they are going to get the best sense of who YOU are and if you re the type of student they are looking for from your essays. So if possible you do want to have some sort of organization, not necessarily the normal 5 paragraph essay but you could probably get away with 4 or even 3 paragraphs.
