To a large extent, the modern American correctional system and its policy of mass incarceration represent the triumph of theories that hold individuals, rather than society, responsible for crime. This view is now so widely embraced that almost no political leader disputes it publicly. But its simple emphasis on locking people up is very costly, both in fiscal and in human terms.

Before examining this dominant view, it is necessary to consider the alternative. During much of the latter half of the 20th century, most of the American left subscribed to the notion that society as a whole is responsible for crime and that individuals commit crimes because of social deprivation or prejudice. Though this view is now derided by conservatives and many modern liberals, it does not lack for appeal or factual grounding.

All of III is NOT a flaw of the death penalty, but a) rather the way we administer it b) who said is immoral? - not the bible {Jesus, the son of the all-powerful God, did not set the 2 other men on the crosses free to prove he was against the death penalty.} ["Thou shalt not kill" - means murder, as in ONE human being wrongfully taking the life of another; NOT the state ridding the civilization of an evil man for the good of the civilization.] c) since you cannot measure deterrence, how do you know it does not deter...certainly not having the death penalty does not deter murders. if anything, all of this debate seems to encourage murder. 5 police officers were gunned down in Washington state this last summer.... a woman was just murdered today in Hollywood by a criminal during a robbery gone bad. d) - innocents wrongly sentenced to death -- is a function of the legal system and court system, not the death penalty. even without the death penalty, the innocent would "lose" his life by being locked up in jail, never to experience freedom again (very probably). Everybody believes in the death penalty. It is just that some of us think that killers should die, while others think they should have the chance to get out and kill again. Ted Bundy, Daniel Tavares Jr, Jeffrey Landrigan,.

It seems that you are repeating yourself in some of your outline. Writing a 10 page paper on this topic shouldn t be hard. It s always a good idea to put the opposing view into your paper. This will add an extra 2-3 pages easily. There are a lot of different sources that are available to help you with your assignment. Make sure you use them carefully and cite them at the end of your paper. Try and give more then just one example where it was used for innocently killing someone. The more examples you have the better argued your paper will be. Plus it s going to add length to your paper and to me that s what seems you are most worried about. See if you can bring in the history and how it came about as well. Blessings

The reason you are having trouble defending your position is that you are wrong.. #1 It gives closure to the victim or their family - they never have to worry about seeing the criminal again. #2 It gives closure to society and ends a violent criminal s reign of terror. #3 It is a deterrent to others & there is not any evidence to the contrary #4 It is not any more barbaric executing a criminal than going to war against terrorists. It should only be used in cases that are 100% sure that the person did the crime. P
