The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is an unforgettable and timeless story seen through the innocent eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp, whose forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence has startling and unexpected consequences.

The line "In a dark time, the eye begins to see." is the opening line of a poem by Theodore Roethke. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is set in a metaphorically dark time in modern history -- the epicenter of the holocaust, World War II Germany. The boy, whose father is one of Hitler s SS, is "in the dark" about the reality of the war. When he befriends another young boy, he thinks the boy lives on a farm with a large fence, completely unaware that it is a death camp. The quote could have something to do with the fact that the boy s father refuses to acknowledge the danger of living so close to the camp -- and it is only after the tragic death of his young son (the "dark time") that he begins to "see" the horrors he has contributed to.
