The German Empire ( German : Deutsches Kaiserreich , officially Deutsches Reich ) [5] [6] [7] [8] was the historical German nation state [9] that existed from the unification of Germany in 1871 to the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1918, when Germany became a federal republic.

The German Empire consisted of 26 constituent territories, with most being ruled by royal families. This included four kingdoms , six grand duchies , five duchies (six before 1876), seven principalities , three free Hanseatic cities , and one imperial territory. Although Prussia became one of several kingdoms in the new realm, it contained most of its population and territory, thus remaining a powerhouse with a major say in imperial affairs. Its influence also helped define modern German culture.

So what is the truth about the Crusades? Scholars are still working some of that out. But much can already be said with certainty. For starters, the Crusades to the East were in every way defensive wars. They were a direct response to Muslim aggression an attempt to turn back or defend against Muslim conquests of Christian lands.

That is what gave birth to the Crusades. They were not the brainchild of an ambitious pope or rapacious knights but a response to more than four centuries of conquests in which Muslims had already captured two-thirds of the old Christian world. At some point, Christianity as a faith and a culture had to defend itself or be subsumed by Islam. The Crusades were that defense.

The Dutch were at war with England 3 times in the 1600 s, and cruised the Caribbean in search of privateering booty. They were also at war with Spain for 80 years, from the latter fourth of the 1500 s until 1646 (with a 12-year truce in the middle). So they also preyed on Spanish New World shipping. And for much of the time, France was an enemy, too, especially during the War of the League of Agusburg, 1688-1697. The Dutch gave us the word, "freebooters" or pirates. They met up with French privateers stranded on Caribbean islands who were living as "boucaniers," or men making dried bacon out of wild pigs over an Aztec invention, the barbacoa (today known as the barbecue). These hardy fellow became "buccaneers," or the pirates of the Caribbean in the late 1500 s and early 1600 s. The Frenchmen had been officially-sanctioned privateers attacking Spanish shipping until peace came and they were stranded outlaws. The Spanish had salted many uninhabited islands with pigs, goats and other animals to provide succor for their fleets, and the Frenchmen, joined later by the Dutch, took advantage of it. The Dutch Antilles became quite a haven for the buccaneers, and later the English and American smugglers taking advantage of periods of Spanish weakness and war to reap the wealth of the colonies. A Dutch fortress guarding a harbor in the Antilles became the first foreign nation s outpost to salute the new American flag during the Revolution. The story is told in the first chapter of Barbara Tuchman s marvelous book, "The First Salute." Holland gained much from this and so did we. Chocolate came to us by way of Holland and its New World adventures. One of the earliest investment "bubbles" that burst and ruined many a European was the "tulip bulb bubble" - and that was spread via Dutch Caribbean enterprises. Of course, the Dutch were also the first importers of African slaves to North America. Not all they did was honorable or admirable. But that is true of all the European colonial nations of the time. EDIT: Oh, by the way - the Dutch traded with the enemy all the time. They found ready markets in the Caribbean during the Protectorate, even during times of war with Cromwell. Read the "Dutch Seaborne Empire" for a lot of realoly good detail.

The fact Hong Kong returned to China in the end shows pro-China sentiment dominated over pro-British individuals. Hong Kong did develop into a major metropolitan city under British development, so some did have sentiments toward a continued existence under the "Commonwealth" flag. A minority of others neither wanted to rejoin China nor continue under British rule, and opted for independence (really unlikely, it s a tiny region surrounded by the PRC for god s sake). But most people had the sense to recognise the British occupied and controlled Hong Kong under unequal treaties. When in the 19th century Hong Kong was handed to the Brits, the Chinese officials had cannons pointed at their heads, does this sound equal? Nah. In 1997 most of the former British Empire was already handed back to their respectful governments, and it was high time for them to let go of Hong Kong, a region in mainland China that stuck out a bit odd to be a part of Britain, which is on the other side of the world. Most Brits recognised the Chinese right to rule their own land. So in the end the matter that mattered the most is the territory s heritage, plus it s not like Hong Kong lived full of Brits - Chinese lived in Hong Kong, so why shouldn t Hong Kong be a part of China?
