An ethnic group or ethnicity is a category of people who identify with each other based on similarities, such as common ancestral , language , social , cultural or national experiences. [1] [2] Unlike other social groups ( wealth , age , hobbies ), ethnicity is often an inherited status based on the society in which one lives. In some cases, it can be adopted if a person moves into another society. Membership of an ethnic group tends to be defined by a shared cultural heritage , ancestry , origin myth , history , homeland , language or dialect , symbolic systems such as religion , mythology and ritual , cuisine , dressing style, art , and physical appearance.

Ethnic groups, derived from the same historical founder population , often continue to speak related languages and share a similar gene pool. By way of language shift , acculturation , adoption and religious conversion , it is sometimes possible for individuals or groups to leave one ethnic group and become part of another (except for ethnic groups emphasizing racial purity as a key membership criterion).

The traditional definition of race and ethnicity is related to biological and sociological factors respectively. Race refers to a person''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s physical characteristics, such as bone structure and skin, hair, or eye color. Ethnicity , however, refers to cultural factors, including nationality, regional culture, ancestry, and language.

An example of race is brown, white, or black skin (all from various parts of the world), while an example of ethnicity is German or Spanish ancestry (regardless of race) or Han Chinese. Your race is determined by how you look while your ethnicity is determined based on the social and cultural groups you belong to. You can have more than one ethnicities but you are said to have one race, even if it''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s "mixed race".

Brazilian society is made up of a confluence of people of several different origins, from the original Native Brazilians , with the influx of Portuguese colonizers , [1] Black African slaves , [1] and recent European , [1] Arab , and Japanese immigration. Other significant groups include Koreans , Chinese , Paraguayans , and Bolivians.

Brazil has seen greater racial equality over time. According to a recent review study, "There has been major, albeit uneven, progress in these terms since slavery, which has unfortunately not wholly translated into equality of income: only in 2010 did the black-to-white income ratio eclipsed its 1960 level, although it appears to be at an all-time high. Education and migration were important factors in closing the gap, whereas school quality and discrimination may explain its persistence." [2]

Race is more biological. For example, most Europeans are Caucasians, as a race. However, ethnic groups are more cultural. Like all Chinese are Asian (okay, may not be entirely accurate), which is biological, but are comprised of many sub-cultures, or ethnic groups, so to speak. Unfortunately, I can't help you with the last part.

First off, PJ needs to take off the pointy white hood and get a life. People like to belong so they look fro othere with similarities. Common bacgrounds, ethnicities, hobbies, religions ect all give people a reason to gather in groups and share something they have in common. The reason ethnicity is so important in the US is because the US is a country of immigrants. Even the Native Americans who came over on the land bridge from asia thousands of years ago. Because the US is made up of so many different ethnicities, people take alot of pride in where they or their ancestors were from as a way of keeping roots. One thing to note is that ethnicity refers to a persons cultural background, but race refers to what they are. We are all one race, the human race, which is made up of many ethicities. Using the word race to seperate ethnic groups is a way for some to feel superior by thinking that another group is so different that they are not even the same species.

Race is strictly biological, ethnicity is cultural but has to do with genetics, for example Masai is not a race but an ethnic group, in order to be a Masai you have to be black and have some specific traits (because the Masai live in East Africa and don t look the same as Western Africans from Senegal), so besides the look, they also have a common culture and historic background that other black peoples don t have the same can be said of Russians and the English or the Japanese and the Burmese people of Myanmar
