Each Argument topic consists of a passage that presents an argument followed by specific task instructions that tell you how to analyze the argument. The wording of some topics in the test might vary slightly from what is presented here. Also, because there may be multiple versions of some topics with similar or identical wording but with different task instructions, it is very important to read your test topic and its specific task directions carefully and respond to the wording as it appears in the actual test.

Woven baskets characterized by a particular distinctive pattern have previously been found only in the immediate vicinity of the prehistoric village of Palea and therefore were believed to have been made only by the Palean people. Recently, however, archaeologists discovered such a "Palean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the Brim River from Palea. The Brim River is very deep and broad, and so the ancient Paleans could have crossed it only by boat, and no Palean boats have been found. Thus it follows that the so-called Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean.

Now that we’ve identified the assumption it is time to write the essay. However, there are a few preliminaries. One thing of note: you do not need to come up with as many assumptions as possible. Three or four is enough to build a solid essay on. And remember, you need to be persuasive, so do not simply list your assumptions without pointing out why they are assumptions and how they weaken the argument.

Also, do not at any point suggest that the argument has any merits. ETS has provided an argument that is full of unstated assumptions. You are to identify these logical gaps and, per the instructions, elaborate on how these unwarranted assumptions affect the argument.

Try this argument essay question about access to a university education. It’s very important that you write a balanced argument before giving your opinion.

It is sometimes argued that too many students go to university, while others claim that a university education should be a universal right.

There is no specific format that the examiners recommend for addressing the Analyze an Argument task. However, with only 30 minutes to plan and write the essay, you would be advised to work out an approach that suits you. The following format should point you in the right direction.

End your paragraph with a statement such as:
However, this conclusion seems unwarranted, or
However, the information provided does not justify this conclusion or
This conclusion is not well supported / fails to convince/ is flawed etc.

The GRE Argument Essay does not need to be difficult. It certainly does not need to inordinately tax you before you even begin the test itself (remember both the Argument and the Issue come before the verbal and math sections).

To make sure you finish the essays with confidence—and not a racing pulse and heavy breathing—you want to learn what to do, and what not to do, for the GRE Argument Essay.

Looking for a topic you can really sink your teeth into? The best topic is one that you truly care about, and one that you re prepared to research. You ll have to back up your claim (whichever side you choose) with lots of evidence and support.

The subject you choose should not necessarily be one that you are familiar with or one that you are in full agreement with. For example, in college you may be asked to write a paper from the opposing point of view. Researching a different point of view is how students broaden their perspectives.

For an argument essay to be effective, it must contain certain elements that will persuade the audience to see things from your perspective. For this reason, you must take a few minutes to plan and prepare before you jump into writing an argument essay.

To find good topic for an argument essay you should consider several issues at first, and choose a few that spark two solid, conflicting points of view or very different conclusions. As you look over a list of topics you should find one that really piques your interest.

Draw a line segment from the origin to the complex number. The length of that segment is its modulus or absolute value. The angle that it makes with the positive x-axis is the argument.

There ARE no arguments in favor of graffiti. It s vandalism and destruction of property, and it costs someone else money to clean it up.

The key idea in favor of tax regressivity comes from the combination of two stylized facts: a) income is linked to productivity, meaning that people with higher incomes are more productive than those with low productivity. b) taxation serves as a disincentive to work. In essence, this means that progressive taxes will place higher marginal rates on the most productive members of society, which implies larger efficiency losses from taxation. A regressive tax will place lower marginal rates on the most productive members of society, so they keep working and producing.
