This type of essay is basically a response to some work by the author. This is a personal reaction and attitude to the specific ideas revealed in a certain work and their application of the author’s life. The expressed arguments always have a very subjective character and correspond to the author’s critical abilities.

In order to produce a good response essay it is necessary to draw strong parallels between the analyzed work and personal experience. All the statements presented in a response essay must be proved by actual evidence presented in the work. This is required to avoid the possibility of the invention of new ungrounded views on the analyzed work. This will make the essay possess a very logical construction and easier for the reader to follow the course of thought of the writer. The author should always consider the ideas, which were originally the base for the analyzed work.

A response is simply how you felt about the reading. I don t know what your teacher is like, so I can t tell you a lot, with some teachers it s OK to not like the book, but others get bent out of shape, so you have to decide that one yourself. It sounds like there are two works concerned, if you liked one and hated the other, you should explain why they affected you differently.

Response or reaction essay, as it is understood from the name, is written in response to something – to a book, a movie, a musical track, a speech, a drawing, a new trend in fashion – virtually anything. It is, therefore, highly personalized; unlike, e.g., book report it isn’t limited with mere descriptions, it is supposed to convey your opinion and message.

As response essays are most likely based on books, we will give you some tips on how to write a response essay on a text , although the same tips are easily applied to any other subject matter:

An essay is, generally, a piece of writing that gives the author's own argument — but the definition is vague, overlapping with those of an article , a pamphlet , and a short story. Essays have traditionally been sub-classified as formal and informal. Formal essays are characterized by "serious purpose, dignity, logical organization, length," whereas the informal essay is characterized by "the personal element (self-revelation, individual tastes and experiences, confidential manner), humor, graceful style, rambling structure, unconventionality or novelty of theme," etc. [1]

The concept of an "essay" has been extended to other mediums beyond writing. A film essay is a movie that often incorporates documentary filmmaking styles, and focuses more on the evolution of a theme or idea. A photographic essay covers a topic with a linked series of photographs that may have accompanying text or captions.
