We started by reviewing the prompt for the Common App transfer essayt:   “Please provide a statement that addresses your reasons for transferring and the objectives you hope to achieve.” (250-650 words)

Unlike the regular Common App prompt for incoming freshman, this prompt was less open-ended, and wasn’t looking for a classic “personal statement” essay.

The University of California Small Farm Program and UC Cooperative Extension advisors in four California regions are working with local partners to organize Regional Agritourism Summits for everyone involved in California agritourism. The Summits will be occasions for farmers, ranchers, county planners, the tourism community and others involved to share, learn, and plan together.

Agritourism operators, tourism professionals, county, city and state staff and officials, community organizations, agricultural organizations, tour organizers and all others who are connected to California agritourism are invited to join the conversations. Summits will be held in Davis, Petaluma, Modesto and Riverside.

In college admissions essays, wordiness is by far the most common stylistic error. In most cases, students could cut one-third of an essay, lose no meaningful content, and make the piece much more engaging and effective.

Wordiness comes in many forms with many different names -- deadwood, repetition, redundancy, BS, filler, fluff -- but whatever the type, those extraneous words have no place in a winning college admissions essay.

This document presents details on the wealth and income distributions in the United States, and explains how we use these two distributions as power indicators. The most striking numbers on income inequality will come last, showing the dramatic change in the ratio of the average CEO''''''''s paycheck to that of the average factory worker over the past 40 years.

Some of the information may come as a surprise to many people. In fact, I know it will be a surprise and then some, because of a recent study (Norton & Ariely, 2010) showing that most Americans (high income or low income, female or male, young or old, Republican or Democrat) have no idea just how concentrated the wealth distribution actually is. More on that a bit later.

There is no need to repeat your applicant details for every college on your list.  Enter your information one time and use it to apply to multiple schools.

We''ll help you understand how to transfer from a 2-year to a 4-year school, or between 4-year schools, without losing the valuable credits you''ve already earned.

Maybe you’re currently in community college, with the goal of transferring to a four-year university for your bachelor’s degree. Or maybe you’re already enrolled in a four-year institution, but have found it’s not a good fit, and you’re seeking other options. Or maybe you “stopped out” of college for a couple of years, relocated in the meantime, and now want to complete your education at a new school.

You have a shot. I have seen posts from people admitted to Berkeley with worse stats than yours - so do give it a try. However it is still a bit of a long shot for anyone (only 25% got admitted this year) - best to have back up choices: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/30/education/edlife/gems.html?_r=2&pagewanted=1&sq=20%20Hidden%20Gems&st=nyt&scp=1∨ef=slogin Thanks Bill

Might be a good idea not to report the Korean Sat Subject Exam score or mention starting a Korean Club, it could hurt admission to UC s. UC Application Readers do not have the name or know the race/ethnicity of the applicant. Over 50% of the people taking the Korean language subject exam score a perfect 800. The College of Letters and Scence at UC s set up admission tiers by the College not major, so it is not really that relevant which major is listed on the application. UC Colleges of Engineering set up admission tiers by the major. The issue with listing different majors at UCLA and the other UC s is that it makes it kind of hard to coordinate the personal statements so that the courses taken, extracurricular activities, planned course of study and future occupation all make sense. If he went to a high school with an API that is 4 or lower, he should probably be admitted to all the UC s. At a high API high school, he might not be admitted to UCLA and UCSD. Definitely will be admitted to SDSU and UT Austin. Hard to say for USC without knowing the high school however USC will not consider the high school. If the high school is competitive, should have a good chance of being admitted to USC. UCSD and UCSB do not offer Business majors. UC admissions are essentially based on GPA and Test scores with a sliding scale depending on the API of the high school. The rest of the application- personal statement, extracurriculars etc- gives the two readers information of the proper context to consider the Gpa and test scores of applicants from non homogeneous high schools when scoring the application 1-5, or really 1-4 since 5 means the applicant did not meet minimum stated UC admission standards. 1 is the best score. As long as the two readers scores do not differ by more than +1, the scores are averaged. If there is more than a +1 difference, a senior reader who is a full time employee scores the application. There are no set standards for scoring an application 1-4. It is totally subjective. Relatively uncompetitive low API High Schools, with API ranks of 1-4, require a lower Gpa and much lower Sat/Act scores for the application to receive a 1 or 2, which usually means admission, than applications from students at more competitive, higher API Schools. After the applications are scored, admission is by tiers and the tiers are either college wide regardless of major as for L&S or by major for other colleges like Engineering. In other words, if L&S has 10,000 slots and 1,000 applicants are scored a 1, all 1 s are admitted, regardless of major. So are all 2,000 1.5 s and 3,000 2 s. There are not enough slots for the 6,000 2.5 s so there is further scoring of the 2.5 s and the L&S class is filled. All 3 s, 3.5 s and 4 s are rejected. For Engineering and other colleges, the same takes place for each major. At "School Reports" tab, find California high school to view academic profile of students enrolled at UCLA and other UC s. http://statfinder.ucop.edu/ [Above website was taken off line in mid November. Must now call UCOP and ask for stats for a particular high school. If enough people do maybe they will put the website back on line.] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zo6NI4wHf4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXI6ELP-aXQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jQ3MJgdkJY As far as which UC he should attend; UCLA if he is admitted, and if not, then UCSB or UCSD. He should also be aware that the demographic profiles are very different at the universities under consideration. UCSB is one of two UC s where whites are not significantly underrepresented and Asians significantly overrepresented. UCI and UCSD are the two UC s where Asians are most significantly overrepresented. UTA and USC have fairly typical demographic profiles for a university in the United States. Good Luck!
