2017 is the 150 th anniversary of the passage of the British North America Act (now known as the Constitution Act, 1867 ) which united two British colonies in the Maritimes with the colony of Canada. The dominant story of Confederation begins with a meeting of colonial delegates in Charlottetown, PEI in September of 1864, originally to discuss the union of the Maritime colonies; this meeting was followed by a conference in Quebec City in October of 1864 and a meeting of colonial delegates with British officials in London in December of 1866. In the dominant story, Canadian Confederation is the 150-year-old creation of a number of white, male delegates of the colonies and white, male British government officials.

The 150 th anniversary of the legal creation of the political community we know as Canada is certainly worthy of celebration, but Canadian Confederation is neither merely 150 years old nor is it solely the creation of white colonists. The roots of Confederation rest in the nourishing soil of Indigenous political traditions of confederacies, including the Wabanaki Confederacy, and were fed by the tradition of treaty-making between Indigenous nations and the British Crown. The Peace and Friendship Treaties between the British Crown and the nations of the Wabanaki Confederacy were among the earliest of these treaties. As well, despite the efforts of federal governments since Confederation to make Indigenous peoples invisible in Canada’s political community through assimilationist policies, the resilience of Indigenous peoples has meant that Indigenous political traditions continue to influence the evolution of the Canadian political community today.

Part of the purpose of Peace and Friendship Treaty Days is to raise awareness of the Peace and Friendship Treaties among New Brunswick political and social leaders, government officials, and New Brunswick citizens generally, as part of educating all New Brunswickers about the treaties; papers and panels should therefore be aimed at this broader audience. We also intend to publish a selection of papers based on the presentations as a follow-up to the colloquium.

Abstracts should be approximately 250 words and should be sent to [email protected] by June 30, 2017.  We look forward to your submissions.

Reasons behind expensive heterodox books and journals are complicated. It may be that production prices of heterodox books and journals are determined by few major commercial publishers; or may be that we, heterodox economists, have not taken this issue into account seriously. Consequences of limited access to heterodox material are simple and obvious (and dangerous): the decreasing number of heterodox journal subscribers and heterodox students, and eventually the death of heterodox journals and associations.

A possible solution to reverse the trend was recently proposed by Professor Weintraub at Duke University. If we take this issue seriously, we may be able to find other ways to reduce prices of heterodox materials and to raise the number of journal subscribers. At the moment, the simple and obvious (and possible) solution is: "subscribe to that heterodox journal you always wanted or join that heterodox association you have been putting off.'''''''''''''''' In his philosophy, based on skepticism and rationalism, he was indebted to Locke as well as to Montaigne and Bayle. Despite Voltaire s passion for clarity and reason, he frequently contradicted himself. Thus he would maintain in one place that man s nature was as unchangeable as that of animals and would express elsewhere his belief in progress and the gradual humanization of society through the action of the arts, sciences, and commerce. In politics he advocated reform but had a horror of the ignorance and potential fanaticism of people and the violence of revolution. In religion Voltaire felt that Christianity was a good thing for chambermaids and tailors to believe in, but for the use of the elite he advocated a simple deism. He opposed the atheism and materialism of Helvétius and Holbach. His line, “If God did not exist, he would have to be invented,” has become proverbial. His celebrated slogan, Écrasez l infâme! [crush the infamous thing!], has been interpreted as addressed either against the church or against the ancien régime in general. Voltaire s influence in the popularization of the science and philosophy of his age was incalculably great. Perhaps his most lasting and original intellectual contribution was made in the field of history. His Siècle de Louis XIV (1751) embodies in part the ideas of his historical masterpiece, Essai sur l histoire générale et sur les mœurs et l esprit des nations (7 vol., 1756; tr. 1759), the first attempt at writing a history of the world as a whole; Voltaire laid as much emphasis on culture and commerce as on politics and war, and he avoided national parochialism. http://www.answers.com/topic/voltaire
