The thesis statement usually appears near the beginning of a paper. It can be the first sentence of an essay, but that often feels like a simplistic, unexciting beginning. It more frequently appears at or near the end of the first paragraph or two. Here is the first paragraph of Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s essay The Crisis of American Masculinity. Notice how everything drives the reader toward the last sentence and how that last sentence clearly signals what the rest of this essay is going to do.

The first paragraph serves as kind of a funnel opening to the essay which draws and invites readers into the discussion, which is then focused by the thesis statement before the work of the essay actually begins. You will discover that some writers will delay the articulation of the paper''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s focus, its thesis, until the very end of the paper. That is possible if it is clear to thoughtful readers throughout the paper what the business of the essay truly is; frankly, it''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s probably not a good idea for beginning writers.

Almost all of us even if we don’t do it consciously look early in an essay for a one- or two-sentence condensation of the argument or analysis that is to follow. We refer to that condensation as a thesis statement.

In general, your thesis statement will accomplish these goals if you think of the thesis as the answer to the question your paper explores.

The thesis statement forms the core of the essay. It is a direct answer to the assignment question, or response to the assignment topic. It is usually only one sentence long.

The thesis statement describes a position. Here “position” means an opinion or perspective that answers the question. It is also known as the argument. The thesis statement also summarises the evidence and analysis that supports that position.

No, but you've got the right idea. A strong thesis statement needs a debatable opinion and a preview of what your essay is focusing on. Sample thesis statement: Every college student should be required to read Shakespeare's plays because of their historical and literary aspects. The thesis and opinion is that every college student should have to read Shakespeare. Your preview is shown in the key words "historical" and "literary." Now your reader will know that in your essay, you will discuss the importance of Shakespeare's historical and literary impact. Your thesis statement is "School discipline needs to be improved because of the growing strength of liberalism in the US school system." Your weakness is in the "there are many ways to do this effectively" part. Try something like "School discipline needs to be improved because of the growing strength of liberalism in the US school system; school discipline can be strengthened by enforcing the rules already set in place, encouraging the teachers to be unified in their rulings and decisions, and making new rules." Now you've listed your three points (insert your own points in there), and your thesis statement has a preview.
