Policy Review and the Hoover Institution were well matched. They shared a commitment to free and rigorous inquiry into the American condition, into the workings of government and of our political and economic systems and those of others, and into the role of the United States in the world. They both brought together scholars with an interest in current affairs and journalists interested in exploring our world in greater depth. They both take up topics not as exercises in theory, but for the purpose of better understanding the world and the betterment of people's lives. They both are committed to civil discourse, the airing of reasoned disagreement, and a vigorous and open debate. They both are diligently independent, not least in affirming and guarding the independence of those associated with them in the community of informed discussion.

Some say that economic development is the solution to poverty: others say it is the cause of poverty. What is your opinion?

Despite levels of wealth one side and development unparalleled in history, billions of people on our planet are still uneducated, poorly housed Other side , sick, inadequately fed or even starving as a result of poverty. Is this a result of economic development, or can a rising tide of economic development give all humans a basic standard and dignity of life? In this essay, I will ask if economic progress is only for one group Thesis: what the essay will do in our society.

Singer begins the first chapter of his book with the following scenario:  Suppose that on your way to work you see a toddler flailing about in a pond. There is no one besides you around to help. If you don’t act to save the child, he will probably drown. However, saving him means ruining your new shoes, muddying your clothes, and making yourself late for work. “What should you do?”, Singer asks (p. 3).

Comparing the effort to alleviate poverty to “an attempt to reach the summit of an immense mountain” (p. xiii), Singer says,

The biggest ever anti-poverty movement came together under the banner of MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY in 2005. Great steps forward were made, but the fight against poverty continues.

Rich countries are blocking a global trade system that would help make poverty history. This injustice will only be changed if enough citizens across the world call on rich country governments to change their trade policies, for example at the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Folk musicians have always been social activists and many of the songs they write are about equal rights and the plight of the common man. The protesters and their supporters learned early on that one well written song could reach millions of people when hundreds of speeches and newspaper articles went largely unnoticed by the public they were trying to reach. Folk songs are the perfect answer the activists were looking for to lead the protests of their nonviolent movement. They spoke of struggle, of poverty, of hard times and the wanting for a better life. They came from the point of view of the common man and the messages came from the heart and soul. The public embraced these songs and they were attracted to the cause because of the messages these songs presented. Although Bob Dylan was a reluctant spokesman for the peace movement his songs touched the people. Study the history of singer songwriters like Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Phil Ochs, Pete Seeger and Joan Baez.

Keys is the ambassador for Keep A Child Alive, and has travelled to Africa to visit one of their clinics. While she was there she to teens and young adults who’ve lost their parents to AIDS and are now the heads of their own households. Keys was also the musical director for the 2006 Keep A Child Alive Charity Gala, and offered a private concert as a prize in an auction to benefit the charity. Alicia Keys expressed her gratitude for a gift of $170,000 given to her AIDS charity Keep A Child Alive (KCA) by the M·A·C AIDS Foundation, a division of the M·A·C cosmetics company that made the donation through its Kids Helping Kids campaign. Keys serves as the Global Ambassador for KCA, a non-profit organization that asks the public for a dollar a day to purchase AIDS drugs for families in Africa. Kids Helping Kids is an annual holiday card initiative of the M·A·C AIDS Fund, with 100 percent of sales going to support pediatric AIDS programs worldwide. The cards, featuring artwork designed by children aged five to 15 from Brooklyn public schools, were available at M·A·C stores and online. Many celebrities used the cards for their personal holiday greetings last year, with all of the proceeds going to pediatric AIDS organizations. "Thank you M·A·C AIDS Fund. This takes the healing power of art further to save lives. Thank you to Brooklyn public schools for supporting Keep A Child Alive," said Keys. As more celebrities get involved in helping African nations overcome debt, AIDS and poverty, some cynics have questioned whether their motives are spurred by good intentions or publicity _ most notably, with Madonna s recent trip to Malawi to adopt a child. Alicia Keys, who is hosting her annual Black Ball charity concert in New York City on Thursday, says such criticism is unfair and a disservice to those in Africa who need help. This photo supplied by Keep A Child Alive shows Alicia Keys with children of the Agape orphanage in Durban, South Africa, in early summer 2006. Keep A Child Alive is constructing a building to house children who have lost all of their known relatives to AIDS. Keys, who is hosting her annual Black Ball concert Thursday,l Nov. 9, 2006, to benefit the charity, says criticism of celebrities involved in African causes is not only unfair, but does a disservice to those in Africa who need the help.(AP Photo/Keep A Child Alive) (AP) "I think that s horrible, and I think that really degrades and tries to discourage people who do have a voice, who do have power, who do have money, who do have the ability to reach out to people and get involved in situations," the 25-year-old R&B singer told The Associated Press in a recent interview. "I think if you make a choice to do something positive, that shouldn t be diminished. I think that takes away from what s actually going on." Keys, who has been involved in African causes for years, said celebrities have been in the forefront of charitable and political causes, and that s how it should be. She also said celebrities have helped direct attention to the problems in many African nations. "I do think that it has become more on people s radars, whereas before it kind of came across as, `Oh, it s so far away, " she said. "It s really positive to know that it is a global community." Keys is hosting the Black Ball concert with supermodel Iman to benefit Keep a Child Alive, which provides drugs for AIDS and HIV patients. The event will include performances by Keys; Iman s husband, David Bowie; Damian Marley; and Angelique Kidjo. Keys, who visited Africa earlier this year, said the problems that beset some countries can seem insurmountable, but she s seen how charity can save lives. "That s why when I speak and I use my voice, I like to emphasize the way that everyday people like you and me. can really be a huge hero," she said. "If you don t do anything else in your life, if you can save one life _ one life? It s amazing. Imagine saving 10 or 20 or 50 or 100."
