I, Pencil, simple though I appear to be, merit your wonder and awe, a claim I shall attempt to prove. In fact, if you can understand me—no, that's too much to ask.

This is essentially the same as a persuasive essay. You want to write something that does offer pros and cons of your argument, but definitively comes down on one side of the issue. For example, "Performances of animals in public places should be illegal." The essay would go on to talk about WHY you feel that way, but also offer opposing views -- and a rebuttal of those views. "Animals that are used for entertainment often endure many hours traveling in small, confined cages. Although some say that the animals get to stretch out after the trip, that is not generally the case. The animals must be contained prior to the start of the performance." You can also take the other side "Public performances of animals are a wonderful way for the public to get to know more rare species of animals." And work it from there. Hope that helps.

Your approach to the writing this is flawed! Hang on, you know it s ok to start writing it without worrying about how to start! There is no rule that says you can t begin outlining ideas prior to figuring out how to word-smith an introduction.
