An essay is, generally, a piece of writing that gives the author's own argument — but the definition is vague, overlapping with those of an article , a pamphlet , and a short story. Essays have traditionally been sub-classified as formal and informal. Formal essays are characterized by "serious purpose, dignity, logical organization, length," whereas the informal essay is characterized by "the personal element (self-revelation, individual tastes and experiences, confidential manner), humor, graceful style, rambling structure, unconventionality or novelty of theme," etc. [1]

Essays are commonly used as literary criticism , political manifestos , learned arguments , observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections of the author. Almost all modern essays are written in prose , but works in verse have been dubbed essays (e.g., Alexander Pope 's An Essay on Criticism and An Essay on Man ). While brevity usually defines an essay, voluminous works like John Locke 's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Thomas Malthus 's An Essay on the Principle of Population are counterexamples. In some countries (e.g., the United States and Canada), essays have become a major part of formal education. Secondary students are taught structured essay formats to improve their writing skills; admission essays are often used by universities in selecting applicants, and in the humanities and social sciences essays are often used as a way of assessing the performance of students during final exams.

The concept of an "essay" has been extended to other mediums beyond writing. A film essay is a movie that often incorporates documentary filmmaking styles, and focuses more on the evolution of a theme or idea. A photographic essay covers a topic with a linked series of photographs that may have accompanying text or captions.

In college admissions essays, wordiness is by far the most common stylistic error. In most cases, students could cut one-third of an essay, lose no meaningful content, and make the piece much more engaging and effective.

Wordiness comes in many forms with many different names -- deadwood, repetition, redundancy, BS, filler, fluff -- but whatever the type, those extraneous words have no place in a winning college admissions essay.

I cut it down for brevity s sake. Mat 11:29 -- Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Mat 21:5 Num 12:3 Ps 22:26 -- The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever. Ps 25:9 -- The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way. Ps 69:32 *marg. Ps 147:6 Ps 149:4 -- For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation. Isa 11:4 -- But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. Isa 29:19 -- The meek also shall increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. Isa 61:1 -- The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; Zep 2:3 -- Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD S anger. Gal 5:22 -- But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Eph 4:2 -- With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Col 3:12 1 Tim 6:11 2 Tim 2:25 Tit 3:2 Jam 1:21 Jam 3:13 1 Peter 3:4 1 Peter 3:15 Ps 25:13 Ps 37:9 Ps 37:11 Ps 37:22 Ps 37:29 Ps 37:34 Isa 60:21 Rom 4:13
