you are qualified for financial aid. student loans (and maybe Federal Work Study ) are financial aid. your EFC of a 20,000 is a very, very huge number. A student’s financial-aid eligibility is the difference between the expected family contribution (EFC) and the Cost of Attendance (COA). The expected family contribution is calculated from information that the family submits on the CSS PROFILE application. Eligibility, then, is determined as follows: COA minus EFC equals Eligibility (“financial need”). Sample Financial Aid Awards Example. Elena’s estimated family contribution is $20,000. Her financial eligibility is determined by subtracting $20,000 from the Cost of Attendance. Elena has also been awarded a merit scholarship, which is a part of her financial-aid award. Eligibility Determination: Cost of Attendance ($11,000) Minus Contribution ($20,000) Financial-Aid Eligibility (-$9,000). you may also consider all or a combination of the following non-need-based resources to assist in meeting their family contributions: an additional $ 2,000 Unsubsidized Direct Loan; a PLUS (parent) loan; and/or a monthly payment plan (to divide semi-annual payments into smaller monthly amounts). These resources may be used to cover all or a portion of the family contribution.

The FAFSA application result, the EFC, is a measure of your financial strength and that number determinues how much aid you qualify for. It is not how much you pay or how much you get. This EFC will be put in your SAR report. You will get notified it is ready and a link to it and they will send it automatically to the colleges you listed on the FAFSA. Those colleges to which you applied to and offered you acceptance will create a financial aid award for you based on your EFC and what financial aid is available (file early to maximize your award, closest to Jan 1 is best each year) including grants (state and college offered), student loans (like Staffords and Perkins), Federal Work Study, Parent loans. Your Hope and Aspire awards are state grants http://www.tn.gov/collegepays/mon_college/lottery_scholars.htm which are considered with the FAFSA. See the terms. They will create an award for you. Sample: http://www.triptocollege.org/paying_colleges/figure_out/sample_letters.cfm They will email you or snail mail you that its ready and you choose which college and aid you want to accept.

You have to apply to Fafsa on the web first to determine your Pell Grant and Federal Loan eligibility. Without this, you cabnot file for any college or government financial aid. Pell grants are decided on your parents income tax returns: what they earned the year before. The school decides, based on your score, how much Federal aid you get. Also check the college based financial aid packs: they vary per school. Some are awarded based on financial need, some based on GPA and some using both criteria
