The 21 Indispensable Qualities of A Leader by John C.

“It’s been said that leadership is making important but unpopular decisions. That’s certainly a partial truth, but I think it underscores the importance of focus. To be a good leader, you cannot major in minor things, and you must be less distracted than your competition. To get the few critical things done, you must develop incredible selective ignorance. Otherwise, the trivial will drown you.”

“A leader instills confidence and ‘followership’ by having a clear vision, showing empathy and being a strong coach. As a female leader, to be recognized I feel I have to show up with swagger and assertiveness, yet always try to maintain my Southern upbringing, which underscores kindness and generosity. The two work well together in gaining respect.”

At some point in your career, a bright-eyed intern or gregarious up-and-comer will approach you and ask you that fateful question, “ Would you consider being a mentor for me? ”

Before you brush off the request or think you’re in over your head, read through the list of mentor qualities originally published by Toastmasters International. After you study these qualities,  use the Success Chain to help you cement them into your attitudes and behaviors.

Do you know whether you have what it takes to become a great leader, the kind who attracts people and makes things happen? If you took the time to really look at yourself deep down, would you find the qualities needed to live out your boldest dreams, the ones so big that you’ve never shared them with anybody? That’s a question each of us must have the courage to honestly ask — and answer — if we want to achieve our real potential.

How a leader deals with the circumstances of life tells you many things about his or her character. Crisis doesn’t necessarily make character, but it certainly does reveal it. Adversity is a crossroads that makes a person choose one of two paths: character or compromise. Every time a leader chooses character, he or she becomes stronger, even if that choice brings negative consequences.

Five years ago, after a career devoted to nonprofit management, fundraising and philanthropy I began to immerse myself in the study of generosity -- what it is, what it isn''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''t, how it manifests and how it changes lives. The result of those years is my book Inspiring Generosity (Wisdom Publications) that was published in February. While the research and writing of the book was a great learning experience, going around the country meeting and speaking with people who want to come together for conversations about generosity has certainly been at least as important to me.

I had three goals when I embarked upon the book. First, I believe in the power of inspiration and I believe that true generosity is powerfully inspiring. Second, I wanted to expand our understanding of generosity beyond the simple giving of money and material goods to something much more meaningful. What I am most interested in is what makes a generous life. And finally, I was interested in what generosity looks like on the ground in our day-to-day lives, not simply in the press''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s fascination with the activities of our philanthropic billionaires.

Anyone who wants to inspire or lead can do so. The key is to not lose key qualities like a humble attitude, vision, or empathy in the process. Great leaders like Bill Gates are successful in staying grounded which enables success. His qualities and achievements set a great example for rising leaders.

Leadership is an important role for any type of organization, whether it be corporations, small businesses, schools, and even families. Proving that you have leadership qualities means being patient and humble. Leadership is bestowed by followers, not a consequence of position. It can take a little work on your part, but following the example of others can help you prove your leadership qualities in any setting.

Over the course of the poem, Beowulf matures from a valiant combatant into a wise leader. His transition demonstrates that a differing set of values accompanies each of his two roles. The difference between these two sets of values manifests itself early on in the outlooks of Beowulf and King Hrothgar. Whereas the youthful Beowulf, having nothing to lose, desires personal glory, the aged Hrothgar, having much to lose, seeks protection for his people. Though these two outlooks are somewhat oppositional, each character acts as society dictates he should given his particular role in society.

The collar or necklace that Wealhtheow gives Beowulf is a symbol of the bond of loyalty between her people and Beowulf and, by extension, the Geats. Its status as a symbolic object is renewed when we learn that Hygelac died in battle wearing it, furthering the ideas of kinship and continuity.

Much has changed in the past decade, however, because many school districts have established entry-year programs that pair beginning teachers with veteran, mentor teachers. In the majority of such cases, the matching occurs before they meet and establish a personal relationship. This prevalent aspect of school-based mentoring programs presents special challenges that are further exacerbated when mentor teachers receive no or inadequate training and only token support for their work.

During the past decade, I have helped school districts design mentor-based, entry-year programs. In that capacity, I have learned much by carefully listening to mentor and beginning teachers and by systematically observing what seems to work, and not to work, in formal mentoring programs. As a result of these experiences, I have identified six basic but essential qualities of the good mentor and the implications the qualities have for entry-year program design and mentor teacher training.
