If I tell you what s wrong with him, it ll ruin the ending. It took me twice through to fully understand Charlie s problem. If I give you hints, you might be able to think it through. 1. Go back and read the section about him and Sam and the kiss that almost lead to other things. 2. Read the sections where he talks about his birthday and his Aunt Helen and his mom and aunt s step-dad. 3. Then, re-read the epilogue section. 4. When you read the word "doctor", don t think of the kind of doctor you re thinking of, and don t envision the kind of hospital you re envisioning. It might help to think outside the box on that one. As far as something being wrong with him: Yes, there is, but he s going to get better. In fact, in my alternate Charlieverse, he does get better and goes on to live a happy, healthy, drug-free life.

Charlie was awake and bored. He calle the number because it was available, and because he knew someone would be on the other line.

I''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''m not finding any information that correlates with your question. I don''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''t even see a diary entry for 1/4 or January 4th. Please check your question and correct if necessary.

Charlie struggles with apparent mental illness throughout his letters, but he never explicitly addresses this problem - rather, it lurks in the background of many of his accounts. At the conclusion of the novel, it is revealed that Charlie was sexually abused by his Aunt Helen when he was a child, but that he had internalized and concealed the abuse out of his love for her and as a result of his empathy for Aunt Helen s own problems as a child.

Stephen Chbosky, 30, has hit a nerve with his novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. In an e-mail interview, he describes his thoughts on the book, which is about a ninth grader who is a bit of an outsider.

Q: How did you develop the protagonist, Charlie? Did he have any relation to your

    adolescence?

As you can imagine, we have a soft spot for this one. In The Perks of Being a Wallflower , Charlie reads a dozen books over the course of the year, and those are just the ones he tells us about. Plus, they''''re all total classics. Doesn''''t get much better than that. We have Charlie''''s English teacher, Bill, to thank for this—he encourages Charlie not only to read, but to think critically about what he''''s reading. He''''s a regular old Shmooper.

Our guy isn''''t just a reader, he''''s also a writer. And we''''re not talking about the fact that he wants to be an author when he grows up—we''''re talking about that fact that he actually writes. A lot. And we get the privilege of reading it. Sure, he doesn''''t participate in other writing activities (like writing for his school newspaper or Punk Rocky ), but at least he''''s doing something. And it''''s just perfect for his wallflower style.

I was hoping that the kid who told the truth [about Sean] could become a friend of mine, but I think he was just being a good guy by telling. (1.2.13)

When done in moderation, these people are called authors. Oh, we kid. But maybe Charlie will use his observant wallflower skills to become a writer.

He realized that his Aunt Helen, who he adored and loved as a child molested him. He didn't realize that she molested him until the end of the book. Although he loved Sam, he didn't feel ready to have sex with her because that's when he began remembering what his Aunt Helen did to him. Before his Aunt died, she would stay at Charlie's house where they would watch t.v. While they watched t.v., his Aunt molested him. Charlie would have dreams about this, but he didn't realize till now that his dreams were repressed memories that did in fact happen but he didn't remember them until now. Probably because when his Aunt molested him he was only a child, and didn't realize what was happening was wrong. That is why Charlie is in the hospital at the end of the book, because he finally remembers. Charlie, however does not blame his Aunt for molesting him. He has an unusual/interesting perspective about it, that he shouldn't blame his Aunt because that's how she was raised and didn't know any better [I don't remember - but I believe his Aunt was molested by her own parents when growing up.]
