If he had known what it had cost me to acquire my art, he would also have known that it would break any collector to buy it. Harris and I had been hard at work on our German during several weeks at that time, and although we had made good progress, it had been accomplished under great difficulty and annoyance, for three of our teachers had died in the mean time. A person who has not studied German can form no idea of what a perplexing language it is.

    N. B. -- I was informed, later, by a higher authority, that there was an "exception" which permits one to say "wegen dem Regen" in certain peculiar and complex circumstances, but that this exception is not extended to anything but rain.

Among his novels are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), [2] the latter often called " The Great American Novel ".

Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, but he invested in ventures that lost most of it—notably the Paige Compositor , a mechanical typesetter that failed because of its complexity and imprecision. He filed for bankruptcy in the wake of these financial setbacks, but he eventually overcame his financial troubles with the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers. He chose to pay all his pre-bankruptcy creditors in full, even though he had no legal responsibility to do so.

Mark Twain - Quotes on the German language.. Some German words are so long that they have a perspective. Observe these examples: Freundschaftsbezeigungen.

so. the topic interests you AND you have the information you need, but you re having trouble putting it into an essay. try telling it out loud, like you re trying to explain it to a friend. what s the main idea you re going for? an essay usually has a point to it other than just giving information. some essays are conversational in tone, and others more academic or journalistic. which kind are you trying to write? what do you think about what s been done to twain s work? do you think it s necessary to change the language? no? do you think literary works should be let stand as they are, as representative of their time? do you have an opinion about the integrity of twain s work? do his wishes and care for his words matter? pick a point and then tell your story. an essay has a beginning, middle, and end, just like a story. don t worry about your first line. just write what you think, and then move your thoughts around on the page later on. read it out loud. if you write stories, you know that one thing flows into another, and that supporting ideas should stay tied together. you have a word processor, right? just spew your ideas on this out onto the paper and fix the order of things later. you may have to add information to make your ideas clear, or leave out points that don t seem to go anywhere. what s the point of this essay? to explain the history of censorship with relation to twain s work? to persuade your reader that the New South edition is a good or bad idea? to explore whether some words should be taken out of use? (and we all know that "slave" and "******" are not synonyms, no matter what that editor says.) anyway. just start telling your story. start in the middle if you have to. write first, edit later. worry less.
