The essays collected here all appeared in The Nation magazine between 1958 and 2005. The early literary ones reflected Vidal s status as a rising young novelist of the postwar generation, and as he expanded confidently into nonfiction, his essays range widely over politics, religion, society, manners and morals. We see him emerge as the pre-eminent essayist of his generation, winning a 1993 Nation Book Award for a collection of nonfiction works.

From the first sentence [of Myra Breckingridge ,] I was transfixed, a convert, an acolyte, and I remain so to this day. “I am Myra Breckinridge whom no man will ever possess,” the novel begins. Myra’s voice was nothing like I had read before. “Frankly I can think of no greater pleasure than to approach an open face and swiftly say whatever needs to be said to shut it.” Touché.
...
In talking about the rise of Christian fundamentalists in 1970s America, Vidal concludes, “The authors of Leviticus proscribe homosexuality – and so do all good Christers. But Leviticus also proscribes rare meat, bacon, shellfish, and the wearing of nylon mixed with wool. If Leviticus were to be obeyed in every instance, the garment trade would collapse.” This is the Vidal style through and through: a serious comment is followed by an ironic gloss.

Though President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry are quick to deny it, the nuclear accord has already become a straitjacket on policy. Just look at the administration''''''''''''''''s dithering awkwardness in responding to Russian plans to sell the clerical regime advanced fighter/fighter-bomber aircraft, which violate United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231 and make a mockery of the timelines for legal conventional arms sales that were on the sidelines of the nuclear talks.

Washington would also come into conflict with Tehran if the United States gathered and led a large Sunni Arab force in Iraq capable of pushing back against the Islamic State. The rise of the Wahhabi Sunni jihadist group has made Iraqi Shiite Arabs, who have had a long, tense, and sometimes bitter relationship with Shiite Iranians, much more dependent on Tehran. Iran has a strategic interest in preventing Iraqi stability and any Sunni-Shiite political settlement there.

Deep into his Feb. 2 congressional testimony on the U.S. government’s annual threat assessment, Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair raised the specter of an unfamiliar threat far from the terrorism, nuclear proliferation, and cyberattacks that the rest of his discussion focused on. Looking ahead over the next five years, a number of countries in Africa and Asia are at significant risk for a new outbreak of mass killing, Blair told Congress. Among these countries, a new mass killing or genocide is most likely to occur in Southern Sudan.

Even more promising, the White House has moved quietly in the last several weeks to create a high-level interagency committee at the National Security Council aimed at anticipating and preventing mass atrocities. This committee should force policymakers to grapple with the risk of mass atrocities early on, before crises get out of control. It should take control of a process now fragmented between agencies, helping combat the bureaucratic lethargy and ad hoc decision-making that has characterized past U.S. responses to genocide.

The peace process in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict refers to intermittent discussions held during the ongoing violence which has prevailed since the beginning of the conflict. [1] Since the 1970s, there has been a parallel effort made to find terms upon which peace can be agreed to in both the Arab–Israeli conflict and in the Palestinian–Israeli conflict. Some countries have signed peace treaties , such as the Egypt–Israel (1979) and Jordan–Israel (1994) treaties, whereas some have not yet found a mutual basis to do so.

Since the 2003 road map for peace , the current outline for a Palestinian–Israeli peace agreement has been a two-state solution.

in terms of beauty, why not pick Heidi Klum or Tyra Banks ? for Hypatia, you could pick Marie Curie - certainly a famous scientist who changed the world I think for intelligence, and influence on the world, i would pick Oprah. really. the real problem is that Cleopatra is famous for knowledge - brains, ruling her country well ( a political skill) but as being so seductive no man could resist her. Although our culture treats her name as indicative of beauty, historical sources are very clear that she was not at all beautiful, whether by standards then or now. for political ability you could use Hilary Clinton or Madeleine Albright or Margaret Thatcher. hmm, Condaleezza Rice was both very smart and very good looking.
