In an odd way, then, The Crucible is best read outside its historical context not as a perfect allegory for anti-Communism, or as a faithful account of the Salem trials, but as a powerful and timeless depiction of how intolerance and hysteria can intersect and tear a community apart. In John Proctor, Miller gives the reader a marvelous tragic hero for any time a flawed figure who finds his moral center just as everything is falling to pieces around him.

The eighteen year-old servant in the Proctor household, Mary is one of the girls found dancing in the woods and is complicit in Abigail Williams schemes. Although weak and tentative, she challenges the Proctors when they forbid her to go to court. However, Mary eventually breaks down and testifies against Abigail until Abigail charges her with witchery. She is a pliable girl whose actions are easily determined by others.

Parris slave from Barbados, Tituba was with the girls when they danced and attempted to conjure the spirits of Ann Putnam s dead children. She is the first person accused of witchcraft and likewise the first person to accuse others of witchery - particularly when she discovers that the easiest way to spare herself is to admit to the charges no matter their truth.

"The Crucible" is a 1953 play by Arthur Miller. It is set in the Puritan community of Salem, Massachusetts in the late seventeenth century. The play centres on paranoia and hysteria, and the ability of fear to cause basic human emotions to take over. The protagonist of the play is John Proctor, an independent thinker who is put into a number of difficult situations by the chaos within Salem.

Although the play is set in the 1690s, it has echoes with a more modern era, and Miller intended the play to be a criticism of the paranoia over Communism in the US in the 1950s. Although the fear of Communism has died down, the key themes of "The Crucible" remain evident today.

Because he died in the name of his beliefs. He wasn't just going to conform to the, for lack of better word, totalitarian society in which they used fear to control the comunity. What better way to have faithful workers than make them fearful of witchcraft? Salem is the perfect example of this. John Proctor had every chance to lie and say he was a witch but he didn't, and for this he was immortilised as a hero who defied the Salemite's regime.

You could consider him a tragic hero at the end. His character evolves sharply through the story till you reach the conclusion where he is almost consumed by guilt when the hangings take place. His tragedy and heroism arise from his journey which he undertakes throughout the story. You can see his confidence erode in act 2 while he gets to know John Proctor. The act of getting to know Proctor is heroic and unusual given the way Rev Hale acts and what he does in the first act. Good luck with the essay!

I love John Proctor Though he commited adultry and wanted to lie to save his own life.. at then end of the book he asked Elizabeth for her approval of signing his name. He wanted to save his faith or "good name" with the lord above. I find him a hero for that. :)
