We use spoken and written words every single day to communicate ideas, thoughts, and emotions to those around us. Sometimes we communicate successfully, and sometimes we’re not quite so successful. “That’s not what I meant!” becomes our mantra (an often repeated word or phrase). However, a good vocabulary can help us say what we mean. For example, let’s say that you are outside in your yard and see a large black car stop in the road. You can see four tinted windows on one side of the car, and you assume there are four tinted windows on the other side, too. Just then, the driver’s door opens, and a man wearing white gloves steps out. He walks to the back of the car and looks underneath. He shrugs his shoulders, climbs back into the car, and drives away. After you remember to close your mouth, which has been hanging open, you run next door to tell your friend what you saw. What do you say? If you know a couple of key words, you can quickly explain to this person what you saw. Instead of describing the number of windows and the length of the car, you could simply say that you saw a black limousine (a long, luxurious car). Then, instead of describing the man with the white gloves, you could say you saw the chauffeur (someone paid to drive a car or limousine) walk to the back of the car. Knowing these key words can help you quickly and effectively communicate your meaning.
The Modern Language Association (MLA) is involved with the study and teaching of language and literature. MLA documentation style is used in many research papers, especially in middle and high schools. Check your Write Source text for details.
Note: In April of 2009, the Modern Language Association released a seventh edition of the MLA Handbook , in which they made a few important changes to MLA documentation style. The most significant change are as follow:
The Modern Language Association (MLA) developed a style for academic writing that has been in use since 1883. It has undergone numerous changes in the years since, but is still used by students to document and cite the sources they reference in their academic papers. The typical resources of books and journals are relatively easy to cite, but other sources, such as artistic works like screenplays and movies, are not so simple. Here''s how to quote and cite a play in an essay using MLA format.
Navigating the MLA Handbook can be pretty overwhelming; there are so many rules that regulate the way we can quote and cite poetry in MLA format in our own writing. Improper quoting and citing can even be considered a form of plagiarism. Here is a comprehensive look at the most important things you need to know to make your English teacher happy with how you quote from and cite poetry in your papers.

Cakes can be topped off with anything from a simple layer to more extravagant decorations, all with marzipan. Marzipan, made from almond paste, is simply something similar to the consistency of play dough and sweet like candy. Cakes with marzipan decorations are often expensive in stores, so follow these steps and save some money by decorating cakes with marzipan at home Instructions Decide if you would like to make the marzipan at home or purchase pre-made tubes. If making at home, you will need almond paste, powdered sugar, corn syrup, vanilla extract and rum. You can find a simple recipe for marzipan online. For those looking for the easier route, you can find pre-made marzipan in most grocery stores. Choose how extensively you want to decorate the cake. If you are relatively new to cake decorating, start by using the marzipan to crate a layer, essentially like a frosting layer, over the cake. For those wanting to venture to the more creative side, molds can be used or decorations can be made from hand. But before starting out, write down the specifics about each decoration you want to use. A strawberry will take two colors, red for the berry and green for the stem, watermelons will need green, red, white and some black. The more decorations you want, the more marzipan will need to be colored. Handle the marzipan similar to how you would handle pie crust. Knead to a smooth consistency. Roll out dusting the working area with powdered sugar or in between layers of plastic wrap to 1/8-inch thickness, wrap around the rolling pin until ready to lay on and decorate the cake. Brush a layer of glaze or piping gel over the surface of the cake. This will protect the cake from moisture and become a glue-like substance to hold the marzipan in place. Unroll the marzipan from the rolling pin and remove the bottom layer of plastic wrap. Hold the marzipan in the center of the cake and begin lying down, smoothing as you go along and trim any edges if needed. Finally remove the other layer of plastic wrap. Work with the marzipan as you would play dough when using molds to decorate a cake. Shapes need to be laid out on a cookie sheet and dried for at least 24 hours. After they dry, they can be stored in airtight containers until needed to decorate the cake.
