There is no one way to write a winning scholarship application. If you gathered together all the scholarship entries that have ever won a prize, you would find it difficult to identify what made them the same. Each would offer a distinctive style employed by the author; a unique insight into his or her past, present and future aspirations.

This uniqueness is the key, and the first point to remember when you pick up your pen to write. Make your scholarship application essay exclusive to you, personalize it, delve deep into your passion and drive to study your subject, and create a response that could only ever relate to you. It is this individuality that stands out, and that’s exactly what catches a judge’s eye and defines a winner.

Hajrah: Judging from your description, you must be applying for a scholarship offered by one of the Sons of the American Revolution chapters - if so, you need to appreciate your organization s perspective in order to write an effective and well-received essay. Spend some time on the website for the National Association, and you ll have a pretty good sense of what they re all about. (see here: http://www.sar.org/About/Our_Goals ) As a helpful bonus, the national site offers a sample of a winning essay from the 2001-2002 competition. You can find that here: http://www.sar.org/Youth/Knight_Essay/Example_Essay There s even more information here: http://www.sar.org/Youth/Knight_Essay_Rules which includes a pretty thorough explanation of what the organization has in mind as far as your biographical section: "The contestant s biography is limited to one page. Topics to be included in the biography are academic awards and achievements, school activities, community activities, and plans for college." I hope that info helps - good luck!

Managing such a project gave me great insight into how many simple initiatives can transform lives.

Remember your audiance! Use well defined statements with a bullet format. Be concise! Be straight forward, and do not over emphasize. You want to bring hard hitting material to the ATTENTION of the reader. Do not be flowery, but use key words to make your point. Do not be choppy. You want your audiance to breath freely. Make them feel as if they just learned something they never knew before. Final note: Good Luck!

Here are some general guidelines on how to write a scholarship essay. One handy tip is not to start off with the word "I". Ease into it with an adverbial clause or participial phrase. http://www.helium.com/knowledge/110367-how-to-write-an-effective-scholarship-essay For your particular topic, consider mentioning bilingual advocacy in health and social care, political participation, access to technology, teaching English as a second language to adults and children, etc. You might want to show that you know the differences between translating [written] and interpreting [oral]. Most people are better at one or the other; few do both equally well, so you can indicate your preference. They are really different skill sets, and it might come down to whether you have better verbal skills or writing skills. Be sure to do a spelling check and grammar check of your essay before sending it in; you don t want any little typos like "choosen" to wreck your chances for the scholarship. Good luck and best wishes!
