The term stress has many definitions, Lazarus and Folkman (1984) have defined stress as “an internal state which can be caused by physical demands of body or by environmental and social situations, which are evaluated as potentially harmful, uncontrollable, or exceeding our resources for coping”.

These definitions indicate that stress represents those conditions under which individuals have demand made upon them, that they cannot physically or psychologically meet, leading to breakdown at one or other of these levels.

It is a causes and solutions type essay. In other words, you have to identify what causes stress and then suggest solutions.

This type of essay lends itself to two body paragraphs - one explaining the causes and the next discussing some possible solutions.

Its a correlation essay, not cause and effect. No evidence has proven that poverty causes crime, there are however a lot of studies that show that they are positively correlated. Do research on studies that have been done related to poverty and crime. The structure of the essay depends on the length it has to be and how much research you were supposed to do. I would structure it by, after your introduction, explaining the underlying causes of crime and how they relate to poverty rates. Explain how people in situations of poverty can be more likely to commit crime (ie. no money for food/housing leads to stealing, etc.) To make your essay more thorough, also explain other reasons for crime - these kinds of things show that although poverty alleviation could reduce crime rates, it would not completely eliminate them because there are other variables. Explain methods of reducing the poverty rate to help reduce crime and explain how effective you think these would be. Go over both methods that are already in place to reduce poverty and crime and if they are effective. Also go over methods that have not been used to reduce the poverty rate that may help reduce criminal behavior (one example I can think of is heavily impoverished areas usually have high crime rates - possible city reclamation and improvement in these areas would reduce the crime rates?) Hope this helps.

This type of essay lends itself to two body paragraphs - one explaining the causes and the next discussing some possible solutions.

Not a pretty picture. Before you get even more stressed, know that there’s plenty you can do to better manage and reduce the stress in your life. The payoff: You’ll feel better, be more focused and efficient, and greatly reduce your chances of having related health problems. Plus, you’ll be better able to enjoy that active, fulfilling life of yours.

Yes, I would agree that the beginning you described in your question would sound like a report. I would tend to think about the introduction to an essay as if you were trying to explain a subject to an audience, or even a friend. Start out by identifying an issue, or concept, maybe pose questions to the listener (or reader), and then go on to answer those questions in the content of the essay. For example: Much has been said about the link between cows and global warming. Cows are the most significant contributors of methane emissions into the atmosphere, and therefore dairy farmers are under increasing pressure to tackle this problem. But what can the average dairy farmer do to reduce methane emissions in milk production, whilst battling against increasing costs, a recession and tough pricing from supermarket chains? (essay continues in next paragraph...) Just an example of how I might begin an essay on a given subject.

Begin by writing down all your thoughts/ideas about the topic. Just write. Don t worry about organization, spelling, punctuation, grammar, flow, etc. Just get your ideas out. Next, organize your ideas into an outline. Then use the outline to begin writing the parts of your paper. While an introduction is a great way to focus your thoughts, don t spend hours agonizing over the first spectacular line. Write an introduction in bullet form and move one. When you are finished with the rest of the paper, go back to the introduction. This is what works for me. I hope it works for you too.
