Homelessness is the condition of people without a permanent dwelling , such as a house or apartment. People who are homeless are most often unable to acquire and maintain regular, safe, secure and adequate housing. [1] The legal definition of homeless varies from country to country, or among different jurisdictions in the same country or region. [2] The term homeless may also include people whose primary night-time residence is in a homeless shelter , a domestic violence shelter , long-term residence in a motel , a vehicle, squatting , cardboard boxes , a tent city , tarpaulins , shanty town structures made of discarded building materials or other ad hoc housing situations. According to the UK homelessness charity Crisis, a home is not just a physical space: it also provides roots, identity, security, a sense of belonging and a place of emotional wellbeing. [3] American government homeless enumeration studies [4] [5] also include people who sleep in a public or private place not designed for use as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings. [6] [7] There are a number of organizations who provide help for the homeless.

In 2005, an estimated 100 million (1 in 65) people worldwide were homeless [ dubious – discuss ] , and as many as 1 billion people live as squatters, refugees or in temporary shelter, all lacking adequate housing. [8] [9] [10] In Western countries, the large majority of homeless are men (75–80%), with single males particularly overrepresented. [11] [12] [13]

Slipping out from her covers, the oldest girl sits at the window. On mornings like this, she can see all the way across Brooklyn to the Empire State Building, the first New York skyscraper to reach 100 floors. Her gaze always stops at that iconic temple of stone, its tip pointed celestially, its facade lit with promise.

“It makes me feel like there’s something going on out there,” says the 11-year-old girl, never one for patience. This child of New York is always running before she walks. She likes being first the first to be born, the first to go to school, the first to make the honor roll.

Expecting perfection from anyone, especially a young person in dire straits because they don’t have a place to call home, erases the issue at hand and engages in victim blaming rather than calling systemic forces into question.

Youth homelessness has increased 72% over the past seven years, according to reports from the National Center for Homeless Education.

In 2004, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs defined a homeless household as those households without a shelter that would fall within the scope of living quarters. They carry their few possessions with them, sleeping in the streets, in doorways or on piers, or in another space, on a more or less random basis. [14]

MITCHELL RILEY: It’s a cool morning late October, people in these tents begin to rise. A passing train their wake up call. This is Camp Bravo. Next to Santa Rita Park on Tucson’s south side. A place where homeless vets and others can find comfort, food, and shelter. The camp is run by Veterans on Patrol, a program of Walking For the Forgotten Ministries. Leaders of this effort seek out homeless vets and offer safe haven, camaraderie, and a path to support services. Bravo is patrolled around the clock in shifts. Manny was on night watch.

MARTIN MARSZALEK: I was 101st Airborne. I actually went in as a voice radio operator, but when they found out that I had some pretty extensive medical background, they made me an expert field medic. I jumped out of perfectly good aircraft with a medical bag and tried to attend to folks who needed help.
