Work hard and you can achieve anything. That’s a bit of advice that’s been repeated to us so many times that it’s sort of lost its meaning. The problem is that we already feel like we are working hard, but for many of us, it seems like we aren’t getting anywhere.

The thing about trying to nail down a definition of hard work is that, as I mentioned, most of us already believe we are hard workers. We went to college. We got good grades. We got jobs. We did exactly what our fathers and high school guidance counselors told us to do. We get out of bed, we go to work, we pay our bills, we keep ourselves and our homes neat and tidy, and we go to bed each night feeling somewhat exhausted.

In the summer of 2004, Angela Duckworth, then a graduate student in psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, went up to West Point to study 1,200 new cadets. The first-years were about to start “Beast Barracks,” an infamous seven-week training program during which they’d toil in the classroom and on the field for 17 hours every day without a break. Many would drop out. Duckworth wanted to find out why some cadets managed to endure this challenge, while others just gave up.

These books convey the same optimistic message that you find in Grit : It’s possible for all of us to change or, as one book puts it, to feel the triumph of a “ neuroplastic transformation.” They tell us that we needn’t be the victims of our meager talents or our lousy genes.

Yup Give examples of people who succeeded through hard work, particularly those from unprivileged backgrounds. Talk about how hard work does not always equate to success however, for example aspiring pop stars who do not succeed or the poor job market right now.

Court Fields School has been awarded “Champion Status” from the National Citizenship Service (NCS). The school is one of only three in Somerset to receive the accolade from the NCS in recognition for their commitment to supporting, promoting and recruiting young people onto the NCS programme.

Paul Cowling who is responsible for careers in the school said “It is a great achievement to be given champion status. Our commitment to the programme has been rewarded by the amazing and positive feedback we have received from students who took part last year. NCS, has provided our students with the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds, to take on new challenges, and perhaps most importantly learn about their community and how they can make a difference.”

Joanne Lipman is a co-author , with Melanie Kupchynsky, of the book “Strings Attached: One Tough Teacher and the Gift of Great Expectations.”

Being effective at work is more likely if you know how to work with and through people. This means learning how to get the balance right between self-reliance and interdependence. On this topic, see How to Be More Effective at Work.

The idea of “grit” speaks to our deepest wishes: we all want to believe in our own limitless potential, and that of our children.

Angela Lee Duckworth begins her book with a story that frames her life’s work as an act of retribution against her father. When Duckworth was a child, her dad would tell her, repeatedly, “You know, you’re no genius.” He was, she says, expressing the worry that she wasn’t intelligent enough to succeed in life.

Well, it really depends upon your way to success. If you choose a good and kind-of-easy career, then you ll have to act accordingly to be successful. In the case of a hard one, you ll need to work HARD. To be honest, according to me, you need to hard work to be successful in life, no matter what. So if you need to be successful, you need to plan and prepare and make everything into action. Best of luck!
