The Scope of the Topics and Materials. We know a lot about gender inequality – its history, how people experience it in their lives, the ways it varies in intensity and form across time and place, the beliefs that make it seem natural, and much more. The outpouring of research and commentary on gender inequality over the past half century has been extraordinary. Unfortunately, despite all this, our understanding of what causes gender inequality remains troubled. Both ordinary people and experts (such as scholars) commonly fluctuate between simplistic explanations that founder under close scrutiny and throwing up their hands in frustration over what can seem an enigma beyond human comprehension. Here we will seek to surmount this dilemma. We will explore diverse facets of gender inequality and varied ideas about what causes might be decisive. We will also look carefully at the ways we can identify and verify the causes of social phenomena. Through these efforts we will aim both to enhance our understanding of what produces gender inequality and to improve our general ability to do causal social analyses effectively.

The class organization and goals. In this class, each week's work will be organized around an analytical task, as well as a set of readings. Rather than focusing on discussion of the readings, the analytical tasks involve attempting a causal analysis of some aspect of gender inequality related to the week's issue, building on the materials we read (in brief papers of a couple pages). The approach in this class seeks to develop analytical skills as well as understandings of the relevant literature by stressing doing actual analyses of gender inequality. (Note: this class does not have an exam nor a final paper.)

    Although merit matters to some degree in many societies, research shows that the distribution of resources in societies often follows hierarchical social categorizations of persons to a degree too significant to warrant calling these societies “meritocratic”, since even exceptional intelligence, talent, or other forms of merit may not be compensatory for the social disadvantages people face. In many cases, social inequality is linked to racial inequality , ethnic inequality , and gender inequality , as well as other social statuses and these forms can be related to corruption. [4]

    The most common metric for comparing social inequality in different nations is the Gini coefficient , which measures the concentration of wealth and income in a nation from 0 (evenly distributed wealth and income) to 1 (one person has all wealth and income). Two nations may have identical Gini coefficients but dramatically different economic ( output ) and/or quality of life , so the Gini coefficient must be contextualized for meaningful comparisons to be made.     Alsop, Fitzsimmons & Lennon [9] also note that the constructionist accounts of gender creation can be divided into two main streams:

    They also argue that both the materialist and discursive theories of social construction of gender can be either essentialist or non-essentialist. This means that some of these theories assume a clear biological division between women and men when considering the social creation of masculinity and femininity, while other contest the assumption of the biological division between the sexes as independent of social construction.

    That is the number of women of color who directed episodes of television in the 2014-2015 TV season at AMC, FX, HBO, Netflix and Showtime, respectively.

    Only one zero is needed for “ Bones ,” “ Supernatural ,” “ NCIS ” and “Law & Order: SVU.” Between 2010 and 2014, not a single woman of color directed any of those long-running dramas. Yet in the same time frame, “Grey’s Anatomy” hired 21 non-white women to direct.

    Unions allow workers to organize and give themselves a voice among a corporate world. A worker, by himself, may have no power, but when you have 1000 workers all demanding a pay raise etc, then the companies usually recognize their voice and often work with them to address their needs. The purpose of the Unions is to protect the small workers in whatever field they may be in. They often provide increased pay, and better working conditions to satisfy the workers. However, many states, such as Florida, have banned the use of unions in an effort to prevent government employees from striking thus disrupting the flow of their field.

    I understand that it s mainly for liability purposes, but in my opinion, it s nobodys business what I do in my spare time. You mean to tell me if I smoke a joint on Sunday, I can t do my job on a Monday? If I show up every day, do my job, and respect my workplace(not showing up high/drunk, not raising hell), I don t know what more an employer can ask for. Pot takes a month to clear out of your system, Cocaine takes 48-72 hours. Who would you rather work with? The guy who fails his test because he likes to burn one every once in a while, or the guy who blew $100 up his nose on Friday, only to be able to be clean on a Monday. I know in my state, you have to take a drug test to work at McDonalds, but the majority of state and city jobs do not require one. You d think that a government agency would be a little more discriminating since it s all funded with taxpayer money. In summary, although I think that private companies have the right to run their businesses as they wish, I consider it a direct violation of my personal liberties to make a judgment of my abilities or define my character by what a pee test tells them.

    First, to sassy_91, if a woman *Chooses* to be a stay at home mom, you say that you have the moral authority to tell her that she s wrong? All women that are stay at home mothers are doing that JOB by choice! No one is forcing them! As for the actual question, unfortunately you are going to have a very difficult time proving your point in terms of locating articles. With this topic you will likely need to find some indirect statistics, such as the vastly larger number of divorces that occur where both the husband and wife work. However there is such a thing as a stay at home dad as well which will only furthur complicate your point. I wish you luck on your essay.
