Help with an introductory paragraph for a persuasive essay?

18 Jan 2017 21:24 | Author: lazymeercat711 | Category: Free sample essay child abuse

I may be wrong, but I wanted some clarification. I was taught in college that the thesis statement always have to be the last sentence in the introductory paragraph. Yours does not follow that rule. So as long as a thesis in somewhere in the intro, it is okay? I am trying to teach my HS son to write an essay.
Thank you

Hi! As an English teacher teaching “O” Level in an international school in KL, Malaysia, I would have to say that your info has been very comprehensive, useful and user-friendly! I’m certainly going to use them and hand them out as worksheets to my year 11 students. Thank you very much and God bless.

I don’t know how to write a lead in. I don’t know how to start? Can this website give me an example of a lead in about the persuasive essay?

A “lead in” is just another way to say attention catcher. Learn about those here:

The primary purpose of an introductory paragraph is to attract the reader s attention and identify the topic and purpose of the essay. A thesis statement often appears at the end of an introductory paragraph.

The purpose of the expository essay is to explain a topic in a logical and straightforward manner. Without bells and whistles, expository essays present a fair and balanced analysis of a subject based on facts—with no references to the writer’s opinions or emotions.

A typical expository writing prompt will use the words “explain” or “define,” such as in, “Write an essay explaining how the computer has changed the lives of students.” Notice there is no instruction to form an opinion or argument on whether or not computers have changed students’ lives. The prompt asks the writer to “explain,” plain and simple. However, that doesn’t mean expository essay writing is easy.

A five-paragraph essay is a prose composition that follows a prescribed format of an introductory paragraph , three body paragraphs , and a concluding paragraph. Contrast with exploratory essay.

The five-paragraph essay (or theme ) is an artificial genre often practiced in schools and required on standardized tests.

The introductory paragraph of any paper, long or short, should start with a sentence that piques the interest of your readers. It can be a question, an interesting fact, a bit of humor, or a quotation. This gets the reader interested, so they want to keep reading. A dull first sentence can kill your paper. Then in a typical essay, the first sentence leads into two or three sentences that provide details about your subject or your process. All of these sentences build up to your thesis statement. Then, your thesis statement. This is what your paper will attempt to prove. Or essentially, what its about. There are many websites that can help you write a great thesis statement. As this too, can drive readers away if not written well. This is usually strong enough to end the paragraph. Then make sure you have an equally strong ending. I usually write my intros and endings first and fill in the middle last. This ensures unity in the paper. Good luck!
