Writers use the descriptive essay to create a vivid picture of a person, place, or thing. Unlike a narrative essay, which reveals meaning through a personal story, the purpose of a descriptive essay is to reveal the meaning of a subject through detailed, sensory observation. If readers come away from a descriptive essay with the feeling that they have really met a person, gone to a particular place, or held a certain object, the writer has done a good job. The identification of the focus of a descriptive essay should be based on the personally perceived experiences. The author basically describes what he observes and perceives. The main message is the reason the author wants to share this experience with the reader. A descriptive essay is to make the reader believe as if he has seen and experienced something on his own.

"the place" is dark, silent and cold. it smells like dirty socks and ;eaves a metallic taste in the back of the throat. now, just replace "the place" with some likely place. how s about a prison morgue?

A really, really detailed physical description. Then go into why it is memorable. If you start with detailed imagery, the reader becomes part of the story, they can see it, smell it, ect. It is engaging and interesting. I reccomend highly sensual imagery (not sensual as in relating to sex, but as in relating to the senses), using color, smells, sounds, ect.
