The public reaction to the story was strong, if mixed. In many circles, “The Yellow Wallpaper” was perceived as nothing more than a horror story, stemming from the gothic example of Edgar Allen Poe and Mary Shelley. It was not until the 1970s that the story was also recognized as a feminist narrative worthy of historical and literary scholarship.

It is dull enough to confuse the eye in following, pronounced enough to constantly irritate and provoke study, and when you follow.

Two weeks later, the narrator’s condition has worsened. She feels a constant sense of anxiety and fatigue and can barely muster enough energy to write in her secret journal. Fortunately, their nanny, Mary , takes care of their baby, and John s sister, Jennie , is a perfect housekeeper. The narrator s irritation with the wallpaper grows; she discovers a recurring pattern of bulbous eyes and broken necks, as well as the faint image of a skulking figure stuck behind the pattern.

The story is set in very distant future, in a time when mankind is just recovering from decades of war fought between Earth and a terraformed Moon. (more…)

A lone girl, wearing a tattered school uniform, lives on a dry river bed. She can’t go to school, has no house, not even a tent just a helpless, lonely girl. (more…)

Of course, the woman trapped behind the yellow wallpaper is the narrator herself.  By pulling down this wallpaper, the narrator feels that she is tearing away the malevolent forces that restrict her [yellow is the color of evil], or "wall" her in.

A: That story scared the crap out of me. B: Most colors are associated with certain feelings. Yellow is usually associated with cowardly behavior, sickness, etc. So be surrounded by that color wouldn t exactly lift your spirits. If she was surrounded by blue, she could ve been reminded of the openness of the sky or the ocean and maybe she would ve felt better. Pink would ve been a calming color, maybe it would ve reminded her flowers. Green could ve made her feel more vital, since it is the color of plants and a lot of things in nature.
