It refers to governmental programs intended to suppress the consumption of certain recreational drugs. First used by US President, Richard Nixon, in 1972 to describe US’s programs, equivalent terms are now used in many countries.

specialized law enforcement agencies, officers and techniques
information campaigns to educate the public on the dangers of recreational drug use
critics often cite these campaigns as a primary reason to end the War on Drugs; they claim the campaigns are frequently misleading or outright lying

David Freddoso recently asked the question: “ What Would Aquinas Say about Legalizing Weed? ” In particular he argues against what he considers to be a specious argument from David Brooks that legalizing marijuana is akin to endorsing it.

Laws profoundly mold culture, so what sort of community do we want our laws to nurture? What sort of individuals and behaviors do our governments want to encourage? In legalizing weed, citizens of Colorado are, indeed, enhancing individual freedom. But they are also nurturing a moral ecology in which it is a bit harder to be the sort of person most of us want to be.

Twenty-six states and the District of Columbia currently have laws legalizing marijuana in some form. Three other states will soon join them after recently passing measures permitting use of medical marijuana.

Another recent ballot measure legalizing the recreational use of marijuana in Maine narrowly passed, but opponents are expected to request a recount.

A Gallup poll released on Tuesday reveals that for the first time in history, Americans are more in favor of legalizing marijuana than criminalizing it. 2013 has markedly been a successful year for marijuana legalization, with Colorado and Washington both passing laws to decriminalize the drug. Now, 58 percent of Americans are in favor allowing the plant to be legal.

With the majority of Americans agreeing that marijuana should be legalized, we''ve gathered up eight reasons why those who are still on the fence about the natural plant should possibly reconsider their feelings.

Why aren t ranchers, farmers lobbying big time for "the growing of hemp"? Hemp is not marijuana and can be grown where other crops can t. Hemp can be used for a number of produts---bio-diesel, cloth, paper. If marijuana can be legally grown in some states why not hemp?

The American education system is so horrible that very few people actually understand documents such as the Bill of Rights which contains the 10th amendment. The 10th amendment states that the Constitution take presidence over any state laws, but if the issue is not covered by the constitution the states are free to make their own laws. I think this is what the other user misunderstood to be the "supremacy clause of the constitution" but I can t really speak for the ignorance of another user.

The taboo is the fact that is is a "gateway drug" for drug abusers who ultimately become addicted to marijuana and then harder drugs. So the taboo would be drug addiction, which is a pretty serious taboo if you ask me. Medicinal marijuana already exists in a liquid and capsule form. It is called marinol. It is taken by mouth, not smoked. It can be accurately and safely dosed and has been prescribed for those who need it for more than 20 years. Those who want to toke on joints for "medical" uses are just blowing smoke. It is basically a crock of **** and most of it would be diverted for recreational use.
