IAGO
One Michael Cassio, a Florentine,
A fellow almost damned in a fair wife,
That never set a squadron in the field,
Nor the division of a battle knows
More than a spinster—unless the bookish theoric,
Wherein the togèd consuls can propose
As masterly as he: mere prattle, without practice
Is all his soldiership. But he, sir, had the election;
And I, of whom his eyes had seen the proof
At Rhodes, at Cyprus and on other grounds
Christian and heathen, must be beleed and
calmed
By debitor and creditor. This counter-caster,
He, in good time, must his lieutenant be (1.1.21-34)

Here, Iago claims he hates Othello because Othello passed him, Iago, over for a promotion, giving "one Michael Cassio" the job as his military lieutenant instead. Iago claims he's far more qualified than Cassio, who lacks Iago's experience on the field of battle. Clearly, Iago seems pretty jealous. But is this the real reason Iago sets out to destroy Othello? Or, is this merely an excuse to go after him? In other words, does Iago say all of this in order to manipulate Roderigo? (Roderigo, as we soon learn, is completely envious of Othello for marrying Desdemona.)

The reason Iago chooses to hurt Othello by making him jealous is that Iago is consumed by jealousy himself.

In Othello, Shakespeare proves that jealousy is inherently unreasonable, as it is founded on the psychological issues of the jealous person, not on the behavior of the one who prompts the jealous feelings.

Here, Iago claims he hates Othello because Othello passed him, Iago, over for a promotion, giving "one Michael Cassio" the job as his military lieutenant instead. Iago claims he''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s far more qualified than Cassio, who lacks Iago''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s experience on the field of battle.

    IAGO
    I hate the Moor,
And it is thought abroad, that ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''twixt my sheets
''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''Has done my office. I know not if ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''t be true,
But I, for mere suspicion in that kind,
Will do as if for surety. (1.3.329-433)

Desperate to cling to the security of his former identity as a soldier while his current identity as a lover crumbles, Othello begins to confuse the one with the other. His expression of his jealousy quickly devolves from the conventional “Farewell the tranquil mind” to the absurd:

As she prepares for bed in Act V, Desdemona sings a song about a woman who is betrayed by her lover. She was taught the song by her mother’s maid, Barbary, who suffered a misfortune similar to that of the woman in the song; she even died singing “Willow.” The song’s lyrics suggest that both men and women are unfaithful to one another. To Desdemona, the song seems to represent a melancholy and resigned acceptance of her alienation from Othello’s affections, and singing it leads her to question Emilia about the nature and practice of infidelity.

Roderigo, a rich and dissolute gentleman, complains to his friend Iago, an ensign, that Iago has not told him about the secret marriage between Desdemona, the daughter of a Senator named Brabantio, and Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army. Roderigo is upset because he loves Desdemona and had asked her father for her hand in marriage.

Iago hates Othello for promoting a younger man named Cassio above him, whom Iago considers less capable a soldier than himself, and tells Roderigo that he plans to use Othello for his own advantage. Iago convinces Roderigo to wake Brabantio and tell him about his daughter''''s elopement. Meanwhile, Iago sneaks away to find Othello and warns him that Brabantio is coming for him.

Othello is a character in Shakespeare ''s Othello (c. 1601–1604). The character''s origin is traced to the tale "Un Capitano Moro" in Gli Hecatommithi by Giovanni Battista Giraldi Cinthio. There, he is simply referred to as the Moor.

Othello is a brave and competent soldier of advanced years and Moorish background in the service of the Venetian Republic. He elopes with Desdemona , the beautiful daughter of a respected Venetian senator. After being deployed to Cyprus, Othello is manipulated by his Ancient (pronounced Ensign ) Iago into believing Desdemona is an adulteress. Othello murders her and, upon discovering Iago''s deceit, kills himself.

Iago claims he''''s far more qualified than Cassio, who lacks Iago''''s experience on the field of battle.

    IAGO
    I hate the Moor,
And it is thought abroad, that ''''twixt my sheets
''''Has done my office. I know not if ''''t be true,
But I, for mere suspicion in that kind,
Will do as if for surety.

Othello, the Moor of Venice is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in approximately 1603, and based on the Italian short story "Un Capitano Moro" (A Moorish Captain) by Cinthio (a disciple of Boccaccio) first published in 1565. The work revolves around four central characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army; his wife Desdemona; his lieutenant, Cassio; and his trusted ensign Iago. Because of its varied themes — racism, love, jealousy and betrayal — Othello remains relevant to the present day and is often performed in professional and community theatres alike. http://www.bookrags.com/Othello http://www.bookrags.com/notes/oth/ http://www.sparknotes.com/shakespeare/ot. http://www.cliffsnotes.com/WileyCDA/LitN. http://www.novelguide.com/othello/index.. http://www.campusnut.com/book.cfm?articl. http://www.pinkmonkey.com/booknotes/monk. http://www.gradesaver.com/ClassicNotes/T. http://www.pinkmonkey.com/booknotes/barr. http://www.bookwolf.com/Free_Booknotes/F.
