Jodi Picoult: How I Confronted My Racism | Time.com

Racist ideology can become manifest in many aspects of social life. Racism can be present in social actions , practices, or political systems (e.g., apartheid ) that support the expression of prejudice or aversion in discriminatory practices. Associated social actions may include nativism , xenophobia , otherness , segregation , hierarchical ranking, supremacism , and related social phenomena.

In the 19th century, many scientists subscribed to the belief that the human population can be divided into races. The term racism is a noun describing the state of being racist, i.e., subscribing to the belief that the human population can be classified according to race. The origin of the root word "race" is not clear. Linguists generally agree that it came to the English language from Middle French , but there is no such agreement on how it came into Latin-based languages, generally. A recent proposal is that it derives from the Arabic ra's , which means "head, beginning, origin" or the Hebrew rosh , which has a similar meaning. [4] Early race theorists generally held that some races were inferior to others and that differential treatment of races was consequently justified. [1] [5] [6] [7] These early theories guided pseudo-scientific research assumptions; the collective endeavors to adequately define and form hypotheses about racial differences are generally termed scientific racism.

Racism is discrimination and prejudice towards people based on their race or ethnicity. Today, the use of the term "racism" does not easily fall under a single definition. [1]

As a result of the above, the Atlantic slave trade prospered. According to estimates in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database, between 1626 and 1860 more than 470,000 slaves were forcibly transported from Africa to what is now the United States. [10] [11] Furthermore, approximately one Southern family in four held slaves prior to the Civil War. According to the 1860 U.S. census, there were about 385,000 slaveowners out of a white population in the slave states of approximately 7 million. [12] [13]

About 4 million black slaves were freed in 1865. Ninety-five percent of blacks lived in the South, comprising one third of the population there as opposed to one percent of the population of the North. Consequently, fears of eventual emancipation were much greater in the South than in the North. [21] Based on 1860 census figures, 8% of males aged 13 to 43 died in the civil war, including 6% in the North and 18% in the South. [22]

Racism is to be distinguished from "racialism," which W.E.B. Du Bois argued was the belief that differences between the races exist, be they biological , social, psychological , or in the realm of the soul. He then went on to argue that racism is using this belief to push forward the argument that one''s particular race is superior to the others. Therefore, Du Bois separates the conditions of racism from racism itself.

Debates over the origins of racism often suffer from a lack of clarity over the term. Many use the term "racism" to refer to more general phenomena, such as xenophobia (fear of other races) and ethnocentrism. Attempts have been made to clearly distinguish those phenomena from racism as an ideology or from scientific racism , which has little to do with actual xenophobia.

And wouldn’t you know, because of both, I’ve gotten comments and emails and tweets from people upset that I pointed out that voting for a public racist with clear racist policies means that one is abetting racism. I assume that they know for sure that they’re not racist, and wouldn’t be racist, so being accused of racism stings. They didn’t vote for racism! They voted to make America great again!

Let’s say you want HBO. So you go to your local cable provider to get HBO and the only way they’ll let you get HBO is to sign up for a premium channel package, which includes HBO but also includes Cinemax. Now, maybe you don’t want Cinemax, and you don’t care about Cinemax, and maybe never personally plan to ever watch Cinemax, but the deal is: If you want HBO, you have to sign on to Cinemax too. You have to be a Cinemax subscriber to get HBO. And you go ahead and sign up for the premium channel package.

You need a better attention grabber. A personal statement usually includes the following. You need a good attention grabber. In general you want your essay to follow this order: Paragraph 1-2 attention grabber. Think of an experience in your life that really showcases who you are. Be detailed. Discuss something signifcant in your life. It could be anything. Or discuss why you want to be in your profession or what story inspired you to study what you are studying. Paragraph 3-4. Highlight your academics: GPA, classes. What skills you learned in class that will help in succeeding in college. Awards and honors that you have received. Sports or clubs that you are in. Paragraph 5. Jobs that you have had that relate to your major? Any other things about yourself that you want to include Paragraph 6: Conclusion

If you want it to be that good, it needs to be something you really care about. How about "Kids have too much homework these days?" You can interview your parents for a comparison with how it used to be, talk about the need for sleep in the teen years, look at the obesity statistics and discuss the value of time to go out and exercise, and explore all the wonderful options available at school from sports to band to art that you don t have time for because of homework.

This is a good essay, but what exactly is the prompt? I feel like it jumps without transition from cultural diversity to grades- you should find a way to connect these two subjects in order to make it more cohesive. I think you can cut out the part about losing weight for wrestling to shorten your essay. Good job!
