Charlotte Perkins Gilman used her personal bout with postpartum depression to create a powerful fictional narrative which has broad implications for women. When the narrator recognizes that there is more than one trapped, creeping woman, Gilman indicates that the meaning of her story extends beyond an isolated, individual situation. Gilman’s main purpose in writing The Yellow Wallpaper is to condemn not only a specific medical treatment but also the misogynistic principles and resulting sexual politics that make such a treatment possible.

This is a difficult question to answer, because I feel that perhaps we can identify both responses in the behaviour of John, the narrator''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s husband. I do feel that he does genuinely love his wife,.

  2. What symbolism is represented in "The Yellow Wallpaper"?

John outlines a specific daily regimen for the narrator to follow, especially when he is in town seeing patients. He portions out every hour of the day in careful precision, ensuring that she will get plenty of rest without the chance to exercise her creativity.

The narrator discusses the house and its beautiful surroundings. The house is solitary, has hedges and walls and gates, smaller houses for gardeners and other workers, and an elegant garden. Still, she feels there is something strange about the house. She attempts to articulate these feelings to John, but he refuses to acknowledge her opinion. She finds herself getting angrier with him now, especially when he tells her to exercise self-control.

The public reaction to the story was strong, if mixed. In many circles, “The Yellow Wallpaper” was perceived as nothing more than a horror story, stemming from the gothic example of Edgar Allen Poe and Mary Shelley. It was not until the 1970s that the story was also recognized as a feminist narrative worthy of historical and literary scholarship.

The mansion the couple have rented is an ancestral home. The narrator initially feels there''''''''s something wrong with the house.. there has to be a reason no one stays there. None-the-less, she find he mansion beautiful, like a place form long ago,.

Of course, the woman trapped behind the yellow wallpaper is the narrator herself.  By pulling down this wallpaper, the narrator feels that she is tearing away the malevolent forces that restrict her [yellow is the color of evil], or "wall" her in.

For an literary analysis you need a thesis statement - a sentence that the main idea you want to say about the characters in the story. So you ve jotted down some ideas - now look them over and figure out one sentence what is the main point you want to make - something about how the authors presented the characters in the story. I haven t read the story myself, but some questions you could ask to come up with a thesis statement might be: Do the characters represent something larger? Are they representative of a specific time or place or certain roles people play? Do their actions show a certain political or social point? So you include your thesis statement in your introduction. The body of your analysis gives examples from the story, sometimes even quotes, that support your thesis statement. Then you summarize your points and basically repeat your thesis statement (in a different way) in your conclusion. Good luck.

This is a great question! You ll want to be careful, however, as using Wallpaper as a framework rather than as inspiration gets into a fuzzy area of plagiarism and Fair Use that you definitely do not want to mess with. Assuming you’ve read Wallpaper, you know that it is the story of a woman dealing with depression, but that Perkins Gilman uses the piece to criticize the position of women in society. I’ve linked to a great analysis of the piece that I found through Virginia Wesleyan College below. If you’re hoping to use this piece as inspiration, I’d recommend doing some research about women’s issues either in history or in the modern world, or simply free write based on some prompts that deal with the same subject. A search for “women’s history month writing prompts” will get you in the right direction, and prompts 5, 6, and 9 in the Bella Online link below are great inspiration. Finally, you may know how to craft a great short story, but if you don’t, I would recommend checking out the “Short Stories” page below to determine the best way to write for your assignment. Good luck!
