Compare and contrast essays are often assigned to students because they promote critical thinking, analytical reasoning and organized writing. A compare and contrast essay should look at a subject in a new way, with fresh insight, using the similarities and the differences between two topics or two perspectives on one topic. [1]

The purpose of a compare and contrast essay is to analyze the differences and/or the similarities of two distinct subjects. A good compare/contrast essay doesn’t only point out how the subjects are similar or different (or even both!). It uses those points to make a meaningful argument about the subjects. While it can be a little intimidating to approach this type of essay at first, with a little work and practice, you can write a great compare-and-contrast essay!

An essay is, generally, a piece of writing that gives the author''''''''s own argument — but the definition is vague, overlapping with those of an article , a pamphlet , and a short story. Essays have traditionally been sub-classified as formal and informal. Formal essays are characterized by "serious purpose, dignity, logical organization, length," whereas the informal essay is characterized by "the personal element (self-revelation, individual tastes and experiences, confidential manner), humor, graceful style, rambling structure, unconventionality or novelty of theme," etc. [1]

The concept of an "essay" has been extended to other mediums beyond writing. A film essay is a movie that often incorporates documentary filmmaking styles, and focuses more on the evolution of a theme or idea. A photographic essay covers a topic with a linked series of photographs that may have accompanying text or captions.

This handout will help you first to determine whether a particular assignment is asking for comparison/contrast and then to generate a list of similarities and differences, decide which similarities and differences to focus on, and organize your paper so that it will be clear and effective. It will also explain how you can (and why you should) develop a thesis that goes beyond “Thing A and Thing B are similar in many ways but different in others.”

Some assignments use words—like compare, contrast, similarities, and differences—that make it easy for you to see that they are asking you to compare and/or contrast. Here are a few hypothetical examples:

The civilisation in Mesopotamia was really the civilisation of ancient Sumer--pronounced SHOOMER--which later evloved into Babylon.and there was never an ACTUAL Mesopotamia.as it is only a term for Sumer and Babylon applied by people outside those civilisations: the Greeks called them "meso- potamian" because it means "between rivers".the first civilisation having flourished between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. This, was the 1st civilisation on this planet and, all later civilisations descend from it. It was created about six thousand years ago by the Annunakki who were ancient space aliens--called "Elohim" in the Bible, simply a plural noun--who are still alive because, they are longer lived than we are. (Lived should properly be pronounced with a long i just as in alive.) Compare chapter six of Genesis with Zechariah Sitchin s theories. Some say the Annunnakki were from the planet Nibiru others believe that they were the NOMO or Nommo from the 3rd planet from Sirius.but all Ancients, whether pagans or Hebrews, believed that somehow we had been "made", shapoed, fashioned or "created" by extraterrestrials.though they expressed it differently. Probably something like a chimp was hybridised with a repttilian space alien to make the LULU or man. Sargon--pronoounced Shurrukin--was royal name, of a much higher hybrid (with more dragon genes) than the MeHum or "merely human" Hammurappi who, envertheless, had SOME dragon genetics in his makeup.but, was on a much lower plane, merely ruling over the mere human cattle and writing laws.
