Before the Revolution, almost all aspects of life were touch by the Catholic church in France. The Church in France controlled the registry of births, deaths, and marriages, held a monopoly over primary and secondary education, and ran the hospital service. No citizen in France could live his or her life without the involvement of the Roman Catholic Church. The power of the Roman Catholic Church came from many sources: it was the largest landowner in the country whose properties provided massive revenues from its tenants plus enormous income from the collection of tithes, a Church-levied tax on all crops produced anywhere in the country. The effects of Dechristianisation was the removal of the church s ability to tax and take in revenue. This was taken over by the state, which at that time was at war and needed the monies. Another effect was that divorce was legalized and church and state were officially separated. Priests, lay people and suspected sympathizers were often imprisoned, executed or sent into exile. 30,000 were forced to leave and thousands more were killed. Church property was seized by the state and sold at auction. Basically, the church was stripped of all assets and functions. This lasted for over 100 years. Today Frances does not recognize any religion per say, it recognized religious institutions. Government has no say in religion and religion has no sayy in government in theory.

The French economy collapsed completely and famine was still a major problem amongst the poor. None of the various law making assemblies nominally acting as the government were able to maintain law and order, particularly in the major cities. Middle class lawyers hijacked the revolution from the working classes, and as they had different objectives many of the complaints and problems of the poor were not addressed, and the middle revolutionaries became desperate to hold on to power by any means.
