The written exam comprises of 2 sections. Section I consists of only objective type questions and section II comprises conventional papers. Both the papers cover entire syllabus of the relevant engineering disciplines. If you qualify the written examination, personality test of 200 marks is conducted.

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts a competitive examination for recruitment and selection to the post of Geologist, Geophysicist and Chemist Group ''A'' in GSI and Junior Hydro-geologist (Scientist ''B''), Group ''A'' for Central Ground Water Board.

    Attempted both 4s.
I thought I could have written better the second one but due to paucity of time and extra pressure could not do justice to my essay.
    hoping to get 100-125

Honestly Speaking, I am clueless about above topics. I can only write max. 50-100 words. But 1000 !!
I know The Hindu and Yojana helps a lot. But Currently I am not able to form views from “The Hindu”. I am even struggling to understand its editorials as my vocabulary is poor and thus improving. My 2-hr allocated times goes in “Only Understanding Alien English Words”
    Am I going Right ?

As a teacher, you must decide what works for you on teaching methodology for any class, to include math and science for any level. As for where to obtain printed matter, you might try one of these sites: http://www.amazon.com http://barnesandnoble.com Good luck.

Ever since UPSC announced new pattern and syllabus for civil services Main examination, there has been a deluge of books in the market on the subject. Instead of making lives of aspirants easier, they have only made life tougher for clueless aspirants.

Fortunately, Pathfinder , a small 197 pages book authored and edited by Dr. Divya S Iyer (139 Rank, CSE 2011) with the help of senior bureaucrats and a retired diplomat,  is a boon to the aspirants who have no clue about how to prepare for the new pattern.

For UPSC mains one need to supplement their every day Newspaper ( The Hindu ) reading with certain books to have a deep insight over varied topics that are now part of the new syllabus.

To gain knowledge on diverse topics it is prudent to read standard texts rather than depending on materials provided by various coaching institutions. First hand reading of basic books enables aspirant to tackle questions of different dimensions.

This is what I learned from my seniors and toppers.
There are plenty of articles on internet on how to prepare the essay (=read
editorials daily etc.) I’m writing one about how to ‘actually’ write it inside
    the exam hall.
In the Essay paper, they give you 4-5 essays and you’ve to
write only one. Time limit -3 hours, Max-marks=200.

In a 2 marker question, UPSC specifically mentions that answer it in 20 words. So with that logic, you’re expected to write an essay containing around 2000 words for the 200 marks.

Well, I find "A Short Guide to College Writing" 2nd edition by Sylvan Barnet, Pat Bellanca and Marcia Stubbs a really good one. However, I have had that book for a few years, so there may be a new edition. Just go to a local bookstore to see all of their writing guides and pick which one is easiest to follow. Like Borders, Barnes and Nobles, etc. Good luck.
