Start by doing a bit of research on colonialism and it s effects on Africa. It won t take long. If you really want to understand Heart of Darkness read this: http://www.historytoday.com/tim-stanley/belgiums-heart-darkness Conrad based his novel on what was happening in the Belgium Congo under Leopold - it pretty much set the template for genocide in the new century. However, if you are not familiar with the history of the region, be prepared to be completely horrified. No one is 100% sure how many Congolese were wiped off the earth - estimates range from 2 million to 15 million. Leopold treated the Congo like it was his personal property. The line can be drawn from the problems in the Congo today directly back to Leopold s reign.

I would actually do an essay on the darker side of human nature. It d be fairly easy essay to do. Just talk about how the Heart of Darkness explores dark side of human nature and about the Scarlet Letter s dark side of human nature. Then spot differences between the two. I wish we could have read these books in my AP English class, I love the Scarlet Letter
