First, The Great Gatsby is an excellent read. Not a fun read, but truly profound. Essentially, the book is about a small group of societal "elites" trying to find true love, beauty and meaning in an utterly vapid, pleasure-oriented world. It is told in the first person, but the two main characters are named Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, who struggle with understanding their love for each other.
